Re: How much rust is too much?

If the rest of the car is OK I'd guess that's a bodged repair from an accident many years ago. Or someone messed things up putting the mudflaps on/off or tore them off leaving exposed metal (which I've seen before). If they're not resealed properly then moisture gets in and creates a mess. If it we...

Haha. There is TONS of movement in the axle without them. lots of clunking and the tires shift forward and back in the wheel well.

Re: How much rust is too much?

Looks decent underneath, so just these two areas. It's freaking weird though.... there are through holes of rust on a couple points on the wheel well, but the shock top areas seem to be fine ?? the undercoating is peeling pretty badly, so I wonder if it peeled back and then trapped water in ...

Re: How much rust is too much?

The nice thing about metal work UNDER the car, is that it just has to be structurally sound. You can generally hide the repair with some body seam sealer, and a heavy layer of undercoat. Most of the time it can be done without compromising the exterior finish. Do you have any pics of the tin worm c...

How much rust is too much?

I have a difficult descision to make, and would appreciate some commiseration and support haha. during the winter, I noticed that the back end of the the the 99 was clunking quite a bit, so I parked it after noticing that it had ripped the upper locating link bracket from the wheel well. Not a big d...

This is from an xr4ti, but we turned the hub down and then machined a disc with register for the rotor and wheel. It would be m...

Re: '85 XR4Ti Rally Car

I still havn't gotten a response from CARS regarding the tubes, but I read it as optional, but will put in the ones that everyone else does, just in case. I finished the 2nd half of the FIA A Pillar bars today, and I have to say, of all the bars I have done on this car, they are the biggest pain in ...

FIA Drawings 253-31 to 253-34

Since I don't know how many people have seen my build in off topic section... I'll post here. For those in the know, (and I have asked CARS for a clairifcation if this is required...) I was doing a final run through of the regs on my cage, and was wondering about FIA 253 8.3.2.2.6. 8.3.2.2.6 Reinfor...

On to the roll cage... Anyone see anything wrong with this? https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VlwrnN5leW8/UnHRjcSxxxI/AAAAAAAAAbA/C3GQEGcKBlw/w600-h450-no/IMG_5643.jpg This is what happens when you measure to the wrong "center" that you marked on the roof of the car... 2" off center....

Re: '85 XR4Ti Rally Car

The 'hot ticket' for these cars for a rear end is apparently a 8" Toyota from an 80's Supra. I ended up finding one here in Calgary for free on Kijiji, so I gave the guy a call. I don't know if anyone here heard of the flooding in Calgary earlier in the summer, but once he gave me his address I...

Re: '85 XR4Ti Rally Car

I ended up deciding to modify the silver car for a couple reasons: 1. The silver car is just a roller anyway, so it has less to take out to strip 2. The runner will be stored at my parents place, so its nice you can just turn the key and drive 3. I thought it was in better shape. So begins the build...

'85 XR4Ti Rally Car

Hey all, I had hinted before that I had started a rally car other than a Saab... and I’m at a point where I need to share, since I am getting fairly far into this and may need some support, since I have decided building a rally car means you are a little bit crazy. I ended up chatting with John Vanl...

Re: Wheel Whores Anonymous

Well I guess I can add 6 soccerballs and 4 Shelby's to my stash as well... got them for the rally car. I just couldn't deal with not having *some* saab items on my car, so With the help of JVAB converted the xr4ti's hubs to the early pattern, machine some adapters, and fitted early vented discs with...

Re: '74 X7 Turbo

The thing that decides the engine height is the steering rack. My engine has the NG900 oil pan, which is really flush already. It seems like it will work now, including hood clearance. Dry sump and other expensive stuff isn't possible as a student.... ;) (his dry sump solution is less flush than th...
