Re: Does anyone not have a Saab anymore?

I've still got three 8-valve n/a 900s. Two of them I try to put away for the winter, since they're rust-free Western cars. The third is a winter beater that I just finished putting an engine and transmission into in the hope of keeping it on the road for a few more years. Last winter, I drove a 2010...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally

I had a much more successful run at this year's Winter Challenge, mainly because I managed to finish the thing after stuffing the car into a snowbank with 20 miles to go last year. The conditions were also a lot better, so we were able to go a bit faster. I finished 11th of 28 starters and 7th in th...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally

I'm going to run the Winter Challenge again this year. After last year's black ice, the weather report for Saturday looks a little more favorable, with cold weather all day Saturday and colder still Saturday night, which should make the ice on the roads a bit more grippy. It's raining in central Ver...

Re: Car Control

Thanks, Drew, for the reading recommendations. I'll try to find the books, but if I can't track them down, I'll get back in touch. I'm not sure what my goal is except to feel more comfortable pushing a car a little bit. I don't think I'll ever get deeper into rallying than the TSD stuff I'm starting...

Re: Car Control

Both of these responses are in line with my thinking. I tend to experiment on my own, both on snow and on gravel. I like the idea of taking a course, but I'm still new enough to rally that I'm not sure it would be worth it yet. I still have specific skills I feel I ought to learn. Left-foot braking,...

Car Control

Hey all. Driving in the snow today here in central Vermont made me wonder how it is that people learn car control. I drove the Winter Challenge Rally last year, which exposed me to the limits of my car control skills. It was humbling. How did all of you start out learning car control as you approach...

Manual steering rack rebuild

Hi all. I just rebuilt a manual steering rack from a 900 GL. I used the eEuro bushing kit and still ended up with a lot of play in the passenger-side end of the rack. Is the bushing made specifically for the EMS rack, or should it work in the slower-ratio GL rack, too? Thanks.

ISO Inner tie rod tool

I'm in the process of rebuilding a manual steering rack with the eEuro kit. Does anyone have the Saab tool for removing the inner lock nuts? Or barring that, any insight into how to loosen those nuts without scarring them up? I'm also looking for one of those nuts to complete a second manual rack. T...

Re: 99/900 Manual Rack Bushings & A-arm spacers

I bought a couple of manual racks from spgftw a few years ago. I'm in the process of pulling a dead power steering rack out of my 86 sedan, and want to use one of the manual racks. Before I install it, I'd like to replace the tie rods, but reading this thread makes me think I need the eEurokit, as t...

Re: Great American Mountain Rallye

I did a little googling and found a Hemmings blog post about it. https://www.hemmings.com/blog/2018/04/03/great-american-mountain-rally-revived-for-2018/ The original rally, from 1953 to 1957, was won by a factory Saab team in 1956. Steve McKelvie is one of the co-organizers of the revival this year...

Great American Mountain Rallye

This looks like it could be fun, but since it stretches over 4 days and 3 nights could also be expensive.

Re: Winter Challenge Rally

I can definitely see the value in all those upgrades. Running this rally made me think that if I were to make it a habit, I'd want a 1988 or '89, so I could have the rear-axle handbrake and a 16-valve motor. I really am devoted to the 8-valve cars, but that extra horsepower seems essential when you'...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally

Thanks to your advice and the abilities of an experienced navigator, the rally was great fun. The conditions were pretty lousy and a big chunk of the third section, which had the highest average speeds, was run in the rain on black ice. I turned a complete 360 on a paved downhill, and considered tap...
