Re: Winter Challenge Rally
Funny how things work out. John Buffum put me in touch with a navigator whose driver can't make it on Saturday, so I'll be riding with a navigator who's done this rally before. It's ideal, really. The weather looks frightful, 35-40 with mixed precip. I don't have studded tires and I'm hoping I can g...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
I don't know exactly why he's backing out. He works nights, and says he will have a lot of snow to move after today's storm. which I know to be true. The lack of commitment bothers me a bit. The practice route we ran last weekend went OK. I'm wracking my brain trying to find someone willing to jump ...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
Thanks again for the crash course in TSD rallying. It looks like I'm probably going to have to put it on hold, as my navigator is backpedaling. If I can't find someone willing to navigate, I think I'm going to volunteer to help out with the WCR and see how it all works. On a related note, it's a sur...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
I've been reading the NER rules, but I confess that the dry language doesn't always paint a picture for me of how something like a transit zone is meant to be negotiated. Thank you for the description. Pauses are likewise confusing. A lot of this I'm going to have to learn about by doing it and maki...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
Having run a practice route this afternoon, I can see where the average speeds are so high that it would be hard to come into a control ahead of time. We practiced a set of tulip instructions and got off course a few times. It was helpful to get a feel for how closely we'll have to pay attention and...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
Destroyed tires? I had thought TSD rallying was a sedate, gentlemanly pursuit, the golf of motorsports, practiced by people wearing matching tweeds. wending their way over gentle country roads in an MG on their way to a Pimm's cup and cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. I'm going to run out...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
My thinking is that just staying on the route is going to be job one, without worrying about the actual time-speed-distance aspect. Many thanks for these pointers. I don't think it would have occurred to me to bring highlighters or a magnifying glass. (But I always have a Vermont and New Hampshire g...

Re: Winter Challenge Rally
I figured someone in this community would have experience with this event. Thanks for the info. The Winter Challenge does seem a bit more tame, as it now starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 2 a.m. I suppose that allows for a round of beers before everyone goes out for breakfast. I've spent plenty of time d...

Winter Challenge Rally
Hi All, Has anybody on here ever done the Winter Challenge Rally in Vermont? It's a time-speed-distance rally and it sounds like fun. It takes place mostly in the dark, on snow- and ice-covered back roads. And it's organized by John Buffum. I'm interested in trying it. Alex https://winterchallengera...

Wanted: Positive battery cable
Anyone got a positive battery cable for an 81 to 84 900? This is the one for the starter that's under the exhaust manifold. Thanks.

A buddy of mine gave me a couple of these wheels he had lying around. Has anyone got a couple more they'd be willing to part with so I can make a set? Let me know what you'd like for them.

Re: front hubs
That'd be great. Let me know when you've got access to them and what you'd like for them. Thanks.

Re: front hubs
Bump. I figured I ought to ask again if anyone has a set of front hubs and spindles for a 1983 base model 900. Alternatively, I'd be interested in a set of axle assemblies for same. Thanks.

Re: front hubs
I think I'm going to need both hubs and spindles. If possible, I'd like to keep the solid rotor set-up. It occurs to me that I might be better off asking whether anyone has a full front axle assembly, from the tripod bearing out to the spindle and hub, that they'd be willing to part with. I need bot...

front hubs
I need a set of front hubs and knuckles for my 1983 base model 900. In replacing a bearing, one of the hubs was misshapen, so I figure I ought to track down a set that's in better shape. I figured someone on here would have some lying around after doing an axle swap. I'd rather travel to pick up a s...
