Re: 2.1 8V Q's

I would follow Dave's tuning guide as this has been done by a known engine tuner that turned down being head hunted by the ford WRC team. The parts are easy enough to get over here I am sure one of us could get some bits over to you ( i love filling FedEx forms in). Valves and seat angles and throat...

Re: 63 Bullnose Rally Project

You should get over 4000 rpm with even later 34 tripples. John Parker over here runs 75mm pistons and grp 2 porting with xp shafts and large chokes on later 34's. He once ran without any chokes in the carbs and the thing flew, but I think he wondered about fueling on light throttle so opted to put t...

Re: 63 Bullnose Rally Project

Mine has the Sonnet 2 carbs, but Saab used at one time two Solex's off a Fulvia (side draft, not the lancia down draft ones normally associated with Saab tuning). The used one full one and cut the choke and plugged the other a la Mini. Vennola pistons are quite heavy and the ones I have, have a 3 mm...

Re: Saab 99 Rally Gearbox ratios re-manufacture

I think the sprocket is a one off weird thing with something like a 26 on one end. These are in Jim's car with a std 4 speed box.

Re: Saab 99 Rally Gearbox ratios re-manufacture

I think the price we have been given aint that bad for a proper copy, just need to prod Steve and get him to go for it. Another forum member has come up with the price and supplier, so I hope it all comes together.
The price is about what I thought it might be, which is a suprise!

You probably want something more like the group 1 guard in the Sport and Rally book.

Re: Jack shafts

If Nutcase can find me a pump I can get my hands on the early jack shaft and dizzy gear. I think Nutcase is based over here, so its a little less hassle for the sender, but I will bare you in mind John.

Re: Historic spec clutch

We would probably get away with the 2.3 item in our domestic championship. They will let me run slightly more modern brakes of the same bore size to start with. But one day I would like to do the Boucles in Belgium, so I need to bare this in mind. I can get a helix item, but my original flywheel has...

Re: Jack shafts

Even better find me a pump!

I can get my hands on the early jackshaft, its the pump that appears to be hard to get. We have the Saab tool to rebuild the water pump, so an old one will do.

Jack shafts

Ok I was thinking about improving the jack shaft. It seems hard to find early water pumps, but I think the fine water pump gear would still fail even if teh shaft material were improved.

Any thoughts on this, or should I just get an early shaft, pump and dizzy gear?

Re: '71 RallyX spec

We are making a full tubular assembly that mounts between the bumper irons, then two tubes bend close to the body and run along the chassis rails picking these up with captive plates infront and behind the wish bones. A 10mm alloy plate is then rolled to suit the frame. Its a bit of an experiment ba...

You might fint the MSS will come down each side and the Y meet behind the guard. Nick's headers came from the US, I remember him ordering them, see below.......

Historic spec clutch

OK as someone pointed out a clutch upgrade will be required. At the moment I have a 2.3 flywheel and cover, which is probably the cheap way of getting a better clutch on the car. The disadvantage is that is all very heavy and since the cover is larger it limits what you can machine out. There was so...

Re: Turbo Pistons

Reports were that the works cars rev range was about 3000-7500rpm, but it was usable on the road below 3000rpm. So probably no worse than a NA with a bit of a peaky rally cam. The problem I have with Turbo's is more throttle response related than dropping totally off boost. Even modern cars lag a li...

Re: Saab 99 Rally Gearbox ratios re-manufacture

First of all the chap we are looking at this with is not Niklas from XP, I have my Niklas's mixed up! He has provided a late easy shift gearset and the drawing to a manufacturer and done the leg work already. The price is looking OK to me at the moment. I will ask about the gear profiles, but I beli...
