Winter Bonfire

Postby SwedeSport » Wed Feb 03, 2010 3:51 pm

Hey Saab Junkies! I'm building up a nice pile of firewood in anticipation of having a bonfire get together in conjunction with a good snowfall. There is some talk about a snowstorm this weekend. The biggest stipulation is that I can't burn if its too windy. Anything more than 3-4 mph winds is bad. I will be checking the wind forecasts over the next few days. If it looks like the winds will be low enough, I may just have one this weekend.

I will keep you all posted with the developments over the next few days. The fire will be at my Printing shop / Saab shop. the addy is 1361 Farmington ave, Pottstown PA 19464. You can mapquest it to see if its a trip you wanna make in the snow.

You will want to bring your own food and beverages. Bring something to sit on too. I usually start up the fire in late afternoon, and burn until about midnight. By about 4-5 pm the coals are usually hot enough to throw the grill on top and cook. Last year we did burgers, dogs, trout, and corn on the cob.

This is all contingent on the weather so check in with me by the end of the week to get the scoop if you are interested. If it doesnt happen this weekend Im not giving up, there will be a few more snow storms Im sure. The go/no go final decision will be posted on here by Saturday morning.

Looks like the bonfire is not going to happen. With the snowfall prediction hovering between 6-20 inches depending on which network you watch for your weather, and the high winds, I'm gonna have to call it off. I fully expect to reschedule it asap. It is difficult to plan a bonfire more than a few days in advance with the wind forecasts are only 36 hours ahead.

I hope to have another opportunity to have another one soon.

But you guys will still spread more salt on the roads in a month than we do all winter ;)

Actually here in NEPA, I have not had to break out the snow shovel yet, and it looks like we may only get 2 inches or so for this, so this may hold the entire winter.

It is certainly unusual, down in DC they have already had a solid 20+ inches, and several small snow events, and it looks like now they are on track for another 20+ inches. It's like DC has suddenly gotten the weather track from Buffalo NY.
Less brake more gas!

You're lucky. My fiancee makes me shovel the driveway if we get an inch or more..

Wind forecasts for Friday night are looking favorable at this point. And it looks like its gonna be around 29 degrees. Final call will be made Friday. In the event that it goes down, all are welcome. BYOB and something to sit on. No food will be served so if you wanna bring something you can, like some hot dogs or marshmallows. 6-12ish.

The outdoor bar and bench seating carved into the 40" snowpack was pretty cool!

It was alot of work, and even though the attendance was lower than expected, it was still a great time. At the end of the night it took almost an hour to cool down the foot deep pile of hot coals. Much snow was piled on the fire in the effort to quench it.

Hope to have another one soon.

Note to self: throw wood chips on the snow around the fire to avoid the slippery conditions that almost put me face first into the pit more than once. It's a good thing I'm so sure footed! Tee Hee Hee!

I'm pretty hurt from all the shoveling over the last week, and if I get motivated to go over to the shop Ill take a few pics.

Heres a shot of the fire pit. The ScrapSaab Bar is seen in the background.
