The first failure was that one, driver side inner. Swapped it over lunch, then broke the drivers side outter cage after lunch.

Luke's car. I was just there with my greasy hands in the carnage. We got him repaired, only to fail again after 2 runs. We put his number on the side of my car and he took his last 2 passes in my car.

What could be so much tougher on the axles at a rally-X? Plain ol' fatigue and good timing (to not be at a rally)?

Any pics/video?

Pretty sure its was exactly that, just long term fatigue on the axle that decided to let go and then a crappy junkyard CV....
There was a transition from loose gravel to packed clay so hard people were laying burnout tracks down on it.... that surely didnt help.
Thanks Jason for letting me take a few runs in the 900!

That thing is pretty ballsy! I was really impressed, power seemed more that enough for the 2nd gear cone crushing we were doing. The lack of power steering and double the turns lock to lock and no diff or handbrake took some getting used to though...

Luke took a pic of my car in rally-x trim, (send that to me or post it, I didn't get a shot of the car.) I got some shaky in car footage of a few of my runs and one of Luke's (in my car).

Its like a different world anytime you hop in a strange car, but great for getting an outside opinion. Sometimes you get so deep in your own setup, that another perspective helps.

The infield was really rough, and the course could have been more open in spots, but it was fun. Looking forward to doing some dirt stuff again. Maybe I can transcend pavement weenie status.

Actually.......The wheel tends to be turned a lot tighter more often at a rallyX and this tends to strain CV joints. Also I suspect that the lower speeds and violent acceleration combine with lots of tight turns really bind up the drive line where in rally you have a lot less full lock to lock steering.

Jasons car in rally trim:

The track where the event is hosted, a good ol' local dirt track, its actually a really great location but they set the course to be too slow where there was no obstructions and too fast where there were giant concrete blocks.... :dunno:

I agree. There's a lot of side load especially at full lock and quick acceleration vs in a rally you're hardly ever at full lock and full power. I once bent an inner driver shaft (where it goes into the diff) in a rallyX. I had an open diff. I've also debeaded a lot of tires rallyxing going from packed to soft surfaces in corners.

Yes, rally-x has caused many a broken heart, cv joint and axel over here as well. Chris and I never go to a race anymore without a box of assembled half shafts, packed with grease and ready to throw at the cars in a moments notice. That's one nice thing about iceracing, even with those nasty tires, we have never needed much stuff like that. The big prob there is keeping the detonation down for 20 mins with your foot to the floor in 4th gear.
99 problems but a SAAB ain't 1
