Setting up a Pacific Northwest Dyno Day for Sept 1st.

Postby squaab99t » Tue Jul 17, 2012 11:58 pm

Who: Anybody who wants a true measurement of the wheel horsepower, torque output, and air/ fuel ratio from 2500 RPM to redline. Either you are there to baseline your car or see what gains (losses) you have made since your last set of mods, this is the way to do it.
All Saabs welcome. Pending the quantity, I’ll be open to non- Saab joining in. Spectators are more than welcome to witness and cheer on your fellow Saab enthusiast.

What: MD 500, Mustang eddy current dyno that allows your car to do wide open throttle runs under controlled, consistent, and safe conditions. The cost is a bargain in my opinion; 45 dollars to putting the car on the rollers, 2-3 wide open throttle runs, graph print out with WHP, Wtq, AFR and RPM.

Where: R&H Garage in Seattle Wa. http://r-hgarage.com/dynoinfo/
This is the same dyno we used at KitoAutosport in Ballard a few years ago.

When: September 1st 2012

In order to make this worthwhile for the shop and get the sweet rate, I need a commitment from at least ten cars to run.

Post dyno runs, if there is enough interest I will offer to host a BBQ at my family’s home, about 15-20 minutes from R&H garage.

As long as we don't get any old two-stroke cars showing up, I've got the "low HP number of the day" prize nailed. Looking forward to it!

Aw Man! That would be awesome if the drive out was not such a doozy!

That price is great too. I did a dyno pull here on the DynoJet traveling trailer. It was 80.00 for 2 pulls.

I would assume that there is no time for tuning or tweaking for that price. My dad paid 350.00 for an afternoon on the dyno with tuning time, and use of their diagnostic equip. Made a pull, adjusted, etc. etc.

You might also win the quickest and flattest torque curve award.

Should be a good time.

She is a long ways between oceans.
Hunter gave a great rate. He is a long time Saab guy and the garage primary biz is Saabs.
No tuning per se. Maybe some in cabin switching like 2 stage boost control, or turning on the water/meth injection.
They would gladly set up a seperate session to do all the tuning you want. Steady state too where the really value is, but it cost about $100 per hour for just the dyno. I've spent a few hours there on the rollers, but it is amazing how much torque you can squeeze out of the engine even at low 12 psi.

I've got two "probablies" for ya: me and a certain green '85T. When would we need to commit?

I am penciling you and Dan in. Commitment by the end of July would be good. Got to do it. screaming deal and the curiosity of knowing whatcha got is killing you.
Guys interested in a BBQ afterwards?

Cool, starting to build some momentum. Looks like the 900 classics are a hit.

Getting close.
Fun starts at 9:00 AM
batting order.JPG

Hoping to run two cars per hour.

I'll bring a score card sheet to keep track of peoples' data. It will be fun to keep a running list and for the late comers to see who is on top and who is running sweep.

Be sure to click R&H tuning web page. It has a pretty good check list to be sure you are ready mechanically. The dyno will not fix your car. More than likely it will steal a line from Rocky IV "I must break you!" in a nice thick Russian accent.

Hey man, give some credit where credit is due: my '85 900 is an "S" model. Represent. I'm not lugging that extra power window and sunroof weight around for nothing!

I am guessing my n/a 8v engine puts down a serious 92 whp, and only hope that I represent the low end of the spectrum. Place your bets now.

92 whp....I will be amazed. If its a stock engine I bet its closer to 70 or 80 whp.

NA 8v engines were advertised as 110 at the crank. Figure about 20% loss thru the drivetrain. 90 probably isn't that far off.

I think 20% loss is optimistic. It will be interesting to see.

Definitely.

My 8v 2.1 puts 110 at the wheels. A stock 2.1 16v is 140 hp. I would guess that my motor probably ends up being 135-140 at the crank. Assuming 30% loss would put my combo at 155 hp.

here is a link to a good article on drivetrain loss.
