Empire State Performance Rally 2015 & a Ride in Sonett #22

Postby Geoff » Fri Nov 13, 2015 12:50 pm

Last weekend I co-drove for Bruce in the "Preview car" (car just before the 000 car) at ESPR. The event had been scheduled for April but dense snow on roads that hadn't been plowed all winter resulted in the event being rescheduled for November.

Only picture I've seen so far:

We ended up only running about half the stages because the rally really only consisted of two roads and the course opening cars were running right behind the sweep cars. So in the interest of keeping the rally on schedule some of the course opening cars sat out some of the stages.

But that meant we were done early both days. On Saturday we went back to Bruce's house and took a ride in some Sonetts. The first was #22, the only road-registered pre-production Sonett in the US. The second was a Sonnet V4 with mildly modified engine and stiffer springs. Riding in the pre-production car was really a treat and it was a lot of fun to see how different the cars were (one being a 3cyl two stroke and the other being a V4). The pre-production car was able to enter corners about 20% faster than the V4 car and maintain the speed through the turns. The V4 accelerates strong and can accelerate through corners - even though we entered corners slower we exited at the same speed as the two stroke car and accelerated down the following straightaways much faster.
