OK SO FOR NOW,MY ASPIRATIONS ARE MET :huh: I GOT TO DRIVE ONE,BUT I DON'T OWN ONE....

BUT, I WAS AT A LOCAL 'CAR BOOT SALE' IN THE SUMMER,AND PICKED UP A FIBREGLASS ESCORT RS2000 NOSECONE.
THE RS 2000 MK2 OVER HERE,WAS LAUNCHED IN AROUND 1976.

NOW THE ORIGINAL FORD 'NOSECONE' PART,WAS A POLYMER TYPE PLASTIC,QUITE FLOPPY,AND PRONE TO DISTORTION.

GIVEN THE MK2 ESCORT SUCCESS,OVER HERE.....SOME COMPANIES IN THE SEVENTIES,BEGAN TO PRODUCE FIBREGLASS COPIES....

SO, THIS IS WHAT I HAVE :dunno: LAST PHOTO,SHOWS WHAT IT IS LIKE,WITH HEADLAMPS ETC....

DON'T GET TOO EXCITED,I ONLY HAVE THE NOSECONE...
AT FIRST,I THOUGHT ABOUT REPAIRING IT ALL,AND THEN SELLING IT ON....BUT,THAT 'DRIVE' IN THE IRISH MK2 ESCORT 2.0,HAS SORT OF STUCK WITH ME... :yay:

I MADE THE DECISION,TO EVENTUALLY 'CUT' IT CAREFULLY,SO IT FIT'S FLUSH,TO GO ON THE GARAGE WALL,WHERE I KEEP ME CLARION 99 TURBO....BUT,FIRST WE HAVE TO STRENGTHEN,AND REPAIR ALL THE DAMAGE.

FIRST ISSUE WAS,IT WAS MISSING ONE OF THE ORIGINAL INDICATOR UNITS...?

THESE ARE AROUND £100 PER SET,SECOND HAND,FOR SOME DECENT ONES :fuckyou: FROM EBAY? NOT ONLY THAT,BUT IN YEARS GONE BY,SOMEBODY HAD HACKED HUGE HOLES,IN THE NOSECONE,AND THE INDICATOR UNIT WAS VERY POORLY FITTED,IT LOOKED CRAP!!

THIS WAS AFTER,I HAD TO GRIND THE RUSTY BOLTS OUT,TO RELEASE THE INDICATOR UNIT,IN THE FIRST PLACE!! WHICH ALTHOUGH IS HANDED,DUE TO THE WIRING,THE ACTUAL LENS IS SYMMETRICAL,SO I COULD TRIAL FIT IT ,BOTH SIDES. :thumbsdown:

I SIMPLY WASN'T HAPPY,WITH THE 'MESS' SOMEBODY HAD CREATED ,YEARS AGO.....SO I DELVED INTO THE DARKEST,DEEPEST CORNER OF THE GARAGE?
I KNEW 'SOMEWHERE' I HAD A SET OF 'VOLKSWAGEN POLO' MK1 1970'S FRONT INDICATOR UNITS(SORRY GUYS,BUT I AM ALSO A CLASSIC VW NUT,BUT NOT SO MUCH THE AIR-COOLED STUFF)

WITH A LITTLE INGENUITY,I COULD MAKE THESE VW UNITS FIT(FIRST PHOTOS).....THE LAST TWO PHOTOS SHOW THE ORIGINAL FORD INDICATOR UNIT,AND MESS SOMEBODY HAD MADE,TO MAKE THEM FIT....

SO,SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN YOU MASSIVE 'SAAB' PROJECTS ON ALL THE TIME,IT IS THERAPEUTIC TO DIVERSIFY,AND DO SOMETHING A LITTLE DIFFERENT...

I MANAGED TO LOCATE A PAIR OF THE FORD ORIGINAL HEADLAMP SURROUNDS,NEEDING SOME PAINT REPAIRS,THEY ARE TOO,A FLEXIBLE TYPE PLASTIC,BUT IT GIVE'S YOU AN IDEA HOW THEY WILL LOOK,WHEN FITTED...

LAST PHOTO SHOW'S THE VW POLO INDICATOR UNITS,NOW IN PLACE,AFTER THE ROUGH FIBREGLASS REPAIRS,HAVE BEEN SANDED...

INCIDENTALLY,HERE IS MY 1993 GOLF(RABBIT) GTI,WHICH I AM PREPARING FOR HILLCLIMB/SPRINT AND FOR USE AS SUMMER ROAD CAR...IT IS AN 8V 2.0 MOTOR 115 BHP,STANDARD SO FAR,JUST RENEWED HEAD GASKET AND CHECKED IT OVER,NEW CAMBELT ETC....BILSTEINS,LOWERED,GOODRIDGE BRAKE HOSOES ETC...BBS 16 INCH SPLIT RIMS.

THIS IS WHILST THE CLARION 99 TURBO,GETS THE 2.1 MOTOR BUILT,WITH DE-COMPRESSION PLATE,PORTED HEAD WITH 'PINTO' EXHAUST VALVES AND THE 'LSD' GEARBOX....




ANYHOW...

ANOTHER ISSUE,THAT WAS ANNOYING ME?
THE UNDERSIDE OF THE NOSECONE SEEN HERE CIRCLED IN RED? HAD ALSO BEEN HACKED OUT,VERY POORLY NON SYMMETRICAL,AND IT WAS DOING MY HEAD IN :ranting:

SO I SPENT A GOOD 3 HOURS,CAREFULLY CUTTING AND RE-SHAPING....SO, IT MATCHES UP :rolleyes:

99 TURBO AWAITS ATTENTION,NOTE PUDDLE OF COOLANT,WATER PUMP SEALS :rolleyes:

THERE IS A 96 'RALLY CAR' IN THERE,SOMEWHERE...

VW GTI,IS NEARING ALL THE MECHANICAL WORK,BEING DONE...


NOSECONE AROUND TWO THIRDS SANDED BACK NOW...I HAVE GOT FOUR 5 3/4 HEADLAMPS,WITH SHOT RUSTY REFLECTORS.THESE WILL BE CAREFULLY GROUND AWAY WITH A BELT-SANDER,TO LEAVE THE FOUR HEADLAMP GLASSES,WHICH WILL THEN HAVE 'LED' LOW POWER LIGHTING FITTED,AND MOUNTED WITHIN THE HEADLAMP SURROUNDS,AND THE INDICATORS ILLUMINATED,ONCE IT IS ALL PAINTED,AND MOUNTED ON THE GARAGE WALL... :thumbsup:

I DO WONDER,WHAT IT IS LIKE IN LIFE TO BE 'BORED'......

OK,SO THIS YEAR(2019) HAS BEEN PRETTY HECTIC AS USUAL! I HAVE ISSUES,IN THAT I LIKE TO RACE ANYTHING? GO-KARTS,RACE CARS,RALLY CARS,STANDARD CARS.....SUPPOSE YOU COULD SAY,A BIT OF A MOTORSPORT NUTTER!

SO, WHILST I CONTEMPLATE EXACTLY THE SPEC. OF THE 99 2.1 TURBO ENGINE BUILD? WORK CARRIED ON WITH THE 1994 VW GOLF(RABBIT) GTI,IN PREPARING IT, AS A FAST ROAD CAR,AND TO COMPETE IN SOME LIGHT-HEARTED MOTORSPORT?

I REALLY DO LIKE,THE TWIN HEADLAMP SET UP ON MY OWN CARS? SO TWO SETS OF THESE ORIGINAL 'HELLA' UNITS,WERE ACQUIRED,AND ONE GOOD SET MADE UP,AND FITTED. ORIGINALLY THESE LAMP UNITS WERE ALSO FITTED TO THE LANCIA INTEGRALE 'EVO',SO THEY ARE 'PROJECTEUR' TYPE,AND GIVE AN EXCELLENT SPREAD OF LIGHT.

BEFORE ALL THIS HOWEVER,THE CAR WAS FULLY STRIPPED DOWN,AND LOTS OF 'POWERFLEX POLY-BUSHES' FITTED.WHILST THE REAR 'AXLE' WAS OFF,NEW LOAD PROPORTIONING BRAKE VALVE WAS FITTED,GOODRIDGE BRAKE HOSES THROUGHOUT. TWO SMALL AREAS OF CORROSION,AROUND AN INCH SQUARE WERE FOUND ON THE REAR INNER WING' CLOSE TO THE REAR AXLE MOUNT,SO THIS WAS CUT OUT,AND NEW 'SAAB 99 ROOFSKIN' METAL WELDED IN,BODY SEALED ETC...
ALL NEW FRONT SUSPENSION ARMS AND DROP LINKS FITTED,ALONG WITH SAND BLASTED AND PAINTED FRONT SUBFRAMES,NEW ENGINE/GEARBOX MOUNTS,AN UPRATED FRONT ANTI-ROLL BAR,FROM 18MM DIA,TO 21 MM DIA,AND THE SUSPENSION,ALL AROUND WAS FINISHED OFF WITH ROAD-GOING GAS BILSTEINS,AND ALSO DROPPED 40MM ALL AROUND.I THEN FITTED SOME 'EIBACH' FRONT CAMBER ADJUSTING BOLTS& CARRIED OUT A LASER 4-WHEEL ALIGNMENT ON THE CAR,AND SET THE FRONT CAMBER TO -2.5 DEGREES.

THE MK3 GOLF IS A VERY STIFF BODYSHELL FROM THE FACTORY(UNLIKE ITS PREDECESSORS),THIS PARTICULAR MODEL WAS AVAILABLE HERE IN THE UK,FOR ONLY MAYBE 18 MONTHS,2.0 N/A 8 VALVE 115 BHP WITH BOSCH FUEL/AIR MANAGEMENT,AND VW OWN,VERY BASIC 'DIGIFANT' ECU.
AFTER THAT VOLKSWAGEN DECIDED TO RUN 'HITACHI' AFM,AND SENSORS ALL OVER THE ENGINE,NOT! WHAT I WANTED....

THERE WAS ALSO A 2.0 N/A 16V ENGINE AVAILABLE(AROUND 165BHP) ALSO,BUT I WAN'T TO KEEP THIS SIMPLE AND RELIABLE.

THE GOLF GTI,WAS READY FOR THE ROAD 1ST JUNE THIS YEAR. I MANAGED TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH ANOTHER GUY,WHOM IS A VW NUT,AND IS BUILDING A MK1 GTI FOR HILLCLIMBING. I VENTURED UP TO HIS 'BARN',AND CAME AWAY WITH A CYLINDER HEAD,READY FOR PORTING/FLOWING COMPLETE WITH A 272 CAM,WHICH HE HAD RUN ON HIS ROAD CAR,BUT THAT WILL HAVE TO WAIT TILL WINTER !!

FOR NOW,THE ENGINE/GEARBOX SPEC. REMAINS STANDARD,SO SEPTEMBER THE 1ST, IT ENTERED IT'S FIRST 'SPRINT' AT OUR LOCAL 'TIGHT AND TWISTY' KARTING TRACK,WITH 90 ENTRIES .TYRES WERE MICHELIN SPORT PILOT 3.

I RUN IN THE 'ROAD-GOING' CLASS,SO WAS DOING COMPARABLE TIMES TO THE OTHER ROAD-GOING 'BMW' MINI COOPERS(1600 SUPER OR TURBO CHARGED), 2.0 RENAULT CLIO 172 SPORTS,AND MAZDA MX-5(EUNOS),CAME AWAY HAPPY THAT IT IS STILL IN ONE PIECE,AND IT HANDLES EXACTLY LIKE ME 'SAAB 99 EMS' USED TO :yay:

SOME MORE OF THE COMPETITION....

MY 1994 MK3 VW GOLF GTI WEIGH'S IN AT 1120KG,THE CLARION 1980 99 TURBO IS 1140 KG!! BOTH IN ROAD-GOING FORM!

SO IN NEARLY FIFTEEN YEARS,CARS CERTAINLY GOT A LOT FATTER!! COMPARABLY,BACK IN 1980,THE VW GOLF GTI MK1,WAS JUST 810 KG COMPARED TO THE 99 TURBO.

THE PEUGEOT 205 GTI PICTURED,WAS AN 8V N/A 1.9,WEIGHING IN AT JUST 720KG :bawl: IT WAS OVER 7 SECS QUICKER,OVER THE 1.6KM CIRCUIT.

SO THAT,HAS ALSO BEEN GETTING WORKED ON.....IT WAS JUST A BASE MODEL,BACK IN 1998,BUT DID GET HEATED SEATS :huh:

IT'S NOW GOT ROOF BARS,A SET OF BBS 16 INCH,AND A ROOF SPOILER.....AND BILSTEINS(SEE A THEME DEVELOPING HERE?)

BUILT IN NETHERLANDS,WITH A RENAULT ENGINE/GEARBOX,BASED ON MITSUBISHI CARISMA FLOORPAN/SUSPENSION :dunno: :rolleyes: AT LEAST THE BADGE IS(WAS)SWEDISH?
