Digging out

Postby Jordan » Sat Feb 05, 2011 12:50 pm

Resurrection...

I was getting nervous about the snow build up on the flat roof of the garages I figured it would be safer to pull the car outside, just in case. It seems like it will hold up, considering the construction, but its age and the amount of weight on the roof is staggering to me. So I did some shoveling...

It was fun driving on ice with summer tires...but with the LSD it managed to make it out and is now sitting safely covered :)

With the proper tires she will be right at home in the white stuff. Another factor to account for is how many layers of roof are piled on top of the garage. That weight adds up quickly. How much snow did you get total?

I'd say a good 4 feet with a couple days of melting thrown in between the first storm at the end of December and now.

It's been warmer the last couple of days so we've had some significant melting. I pulled my 900 out and cleared the driveway yesterday. A couple more storms are on the horizon, but I'm ready for spring now.

I should come up to your place with my plow and rent a room for the winter. I could probably make some money.

Jason, you might want to continue north. According to the National Weather Service we've had over 9.5 feet at my house this year.

Maybe I should get an F250 or F350 for that. I think we only got around 2 ft collectively here this winter.

I cant recall what it was, but I heard some guesstimates how much one square foot of roof covered in snow 2 feet deep weighs. On the average sized home it amounted to a crazy figure. Its no wonder roofs cave in every year. The most surprising part was that it was mostly new homes. Open plan floors, and chincy construction, and larger roof spans due to bigger overall places.

My neighbor was saying its between 7 and 30 lb per cubic foot (depending on density/water content). Maybe Mr. Wirt can tell us :)

Shoveling, it felt like in the 15-20lb range..there were 4" of semi-solid ice crust followed by less dense stuff...about 20" high. Id say the garage is like 40' x 15'? So what is that like 7-8 tons?

I just imagine "Mayhem" from the Allstate commercial laying on your roof.

Okay, water weighs 5.3 lbs/ ft^2 inch.
Fresh snow density varies from .10 for fresh "powder" snow to .35-.40 for "Cascade Concrete". As it settles, density rises, and a typical settled winter snow pack is in the .30-.35 range. Ice approaches a density of .92. We'll round up to 1 for this excercise and use a typical .33 for the older snow. When snow is "ripe" (beginning to melt and liquid water running out), it's typically .45.

You have a 600 ft^2 roof.
4" ice = 1 x 4 x 600 x 5.3 = 12720 lbs for the ice.
20" snow = .33 x 20 x 600 x 5.3 = 20988 for the snow.
(12720 + 20988)/ 2000lbs/ton = 16.8 Tons ( :-O ) or 540 ft^3 of water!

An easy way to find the real density (or a good approximation thereof) would be to jam a coffee can or other metal tube into the snow, capturing a sample w/ as little deformation as possible. Measure the depth of the snow (should be the same as the height of the can). Melt the snow in the can, measure the depth of water. This number is your snow water equivalent. Divide the melted depth (SWE) by the raw depth to get the density. That would give you a better number than just using the .33 average...
Obviously, a true snow survey sample uses a tube that captures a complete vertical sample and the sample is weighed in the field (unmelted), but a set of real survey tubes and scales can be a bit spendy...

The 20" included the 4" of ice which probably isn't "ice-ice".... I took a sample just for fun, although the snow has changed quite a bit since the big storm so we'll see where we are at.

The sample I took was 2.25" of water from a 4.625 which is ~0.5 density. There is probably 12" of this on the roof still.

On a semi-related note, for those of you who don't know , the roof on my parents business , where I worked until recently , collapsed... here is a pic showing what the collapse did to the girders... it was an indoor tennis club.

Dude that sucks. Hopefully noone was hurt, you were able to salvage some stuff, and the insurance was adequate enough to get them back on track.

Yes no one was hurt, we had closed early because of the impending ice storm so nobody was inside...It happened only a week or so ago, so they are still figuring out what to do...suffice to say the t-shirt order is on hold :bawl: .
