[soob] how not to pack a windshield

Postby sjones » Fri Aug 12, 2011 7:37 pm

I cursed a lot and almost cried. :ranting: .. you think FedEx is going to cover this? I filed a claim but I'm prepared to be hung out to dry. Despite the obvious damage the vintage windscreen was in excellent condition, no chips .. no pits .. it was pristine .. What a loss! :bawl:

The blame can be placed on the seller. That just wasn't packed well at all. I think fedex is gonna deny the claim. Sucks man! I cursed some more for you.

Bummer :bawl:

Maybe try Pilkington?

I read about it here: http://www.saabnet.com/tsn/bb/99/search ... pilkington

IIRC, they have a facility up in Everett.

It looks like a 'new' one from pilkington is $305 + $150 freight. I'll try giving them a call. Lexan (or a net) isn't an option haha.

Wow, that was thoroughly pathetic packaging.

I hope the seller gets a (polite) mouthful for that :( And of course you get a full refund.

I agree .. I worked for UPS (for one day) in the late 80s doing truck unloading at a hub. The jocks would throw anything that said "fragile" or "TV" on it extra hard.

There were no fragile stickers on this. However, the salvage guy has taken care of everything .. so deal wise, everything is fine. However, I still can't get over seeing two windshields broken in one year :(

I called Pilkington. They show 5 windshields on order from 2010, but don't show any in stock. I should get a call back on this.

I used car-parts.com to locate a wrecking yard over in Ellensburg, but got a call back saying that $50 windshield in excellent condition had a rock chip in it that was starting to fan out.

I have one sitting in my house thats in good condition. I cringe at the packing job I would have to do to ship it properly. I got this one from these guys a couple years ago and at the time this was 1 of 3. I am sure they still have them:

I recognized their search interface as being from http://www.car-part.com, which is nationwide. If you go there and search the entire country, a bunch show up, the closest of which is in Kittitas (near Ellensburg, the home town of minor grunge stars Screaming Trees, and the point on a cross-state drive where, if you're not driving, it's a good idea to break open the barley pops to dull the boredom of a long haul to Spokane :yay:):

http://www.gerrysap.com/

They want $50; it's listed in "excellent" condition.

Yeah I use car-part.com and saw the one over in Ellensburg that was in 'excellent' condition. However, it does have a rock chip which is already starting to expand.

I'll keep looking.. I appreciate the help. There is one in Lewiston, ID which is the next closest.
