Pinion bearings nut

Postby nutcase » Sun Nov 06, 2011 12:27 pm

Hi folks :) Getting back to rebuilding my first box after "Life" got in the way for a few weeks. I'm onto preloading the pinion bearings. I've attached the holder to a piece of worktop, and using the spanner and an extension I can get the preload to just over half a KGF and no more. The book says 4.7-7KGF! Am I misunderstanding something here, the nut will have to be incredibly tight to get that kind of load!

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall having to stick the thing in a press, crush the crash washer to spec, and then torque the nut and check.

You have a saab trans manual?

It's always suprising how much the rolling torque is when it's tightened to spec. I've never needed more than the Saab wrench and a good pull to get it to spec though. What are you using for a crush washer?

Kilogram-feet? I have a manual, but I never noticed it having a crazy mismatch of units on the preload spec like that.

The spec is in newtons, i think 45-70 or something like that. I usually go towards the upper end which is right at the end of the factory dynamometer as I recall.

I'm using a new crush washer. The book I'm using has both Newtons and KGF - the training manual you guys kindly provided has the same info.

I'm obviously a wimp :bawl:
