C900 Shift Couplers

Postby Geoff » Tue Jan 31, 2012 10:31 am

Does anyone know if a '94+ 9000 shift shaft coupler fits a later C900?
Apparently my brother's coupler came apart and he's limited to a few gears (and no reverse). I seem to remember later C900s taking the same coupler as later 9000s, but I've only worked on "newer" C900s, never owned one newer than '86 so I can't remember. He's in a different state so I can't just go look to check.

Eeuroparts sells this for 9000s

Does look like it might fit....
Answering my own question here. It turns out '91-'93 C900s use the same junk rubber coupler as early 9000s (which need to be replaced all the time on 9000s). They seem to last better on C900s though(?)

the pre 1991 couplers seem to work the best IMO. The rubber block units fail pretty quickly when exposed to motor oil, which in an old 900, will happen.

Do you drill those with your mill Luke? I tried it once with a vice and a drill press, no such luck.

For drilling round tube in a drill press I usually have pretty good luck grinding a flat where you want the hole to go so you can drill perpendicular to a flat surface, like with an angle grinder. Then start the hole with a nice stubby center drill.

You could always use a couple of hose clamps or large zip ties for a quick fix. This did the trick for me on a couple of 91 SPGs. The new part was close to $100 last I checked, so this was cost effective and worked out fine for me.

x2 for the zip ties for the rubber block type, they're holding it together in my '86 9000T a few weeks after it failed. This guy sells the German-made replacement for $16.35/shipped on eBay, I bought mine from him. Still have yet to install it because those zip ties work so well!

I've used Luke's solution on my 99 but I think I'll use that 9000 style on my 900 and replace the rubber section w/ solid UHMW.
