Re: Sandy
I wish everyone in the path of the storm to be safe.
But part of me is shaking my head a little. This is just a category 1 hurricane bordering on tropical storm status. Here on the coast of Florida, no one talks about evacuation for those. Those storms don't even warrant a trip to the supermarket for supplies.
Yes, we already got the rain and 50+ mph winds. Result: maybe 10 minutes of cleaning up branches in the yard.
Be safe nevertheless.

Re: Sandy
Last year when Irene hit Vermont we didn't have any wind at all and we didn't get that much rain. But we still lost just about every bridge in the middle of the state and most of our dirt roads, medium highways etc. It was impressive. This storm could be on par with the water and if we get the wind we usually get lots of trees blown down which translates to power outage. Should be interesting.

Re: Sandy
I have done some damage control, and battened down anything that might blow over or away. Other than that I just have to make sure that anything I dont want wet is up off the floor. My shop is in the basement of the building, and the parking lot bellies out and will hold some water during heavy rains. I am usually ok unless the ground reaches saturation. That usually takes a few days of steady rain.
The neighbor recently built a dog pen out back, and when he filled it to level it, he essentially dammed up the drain swail on the property. I am hoping this does not traslate to flooding in my place. I get some water in the shop as it seeps thru the walls after days of heavy rain.
The wind is a concern, but when I was racing Hobie Cats years ago, we sailed in 45 mph winds one day... That was a real challenge, but the boat was rocket fast. Like seriously coming completely out of the water a few times over swells.

Re: Sandy
went sea kayaking in 14 foot swells years ago on the edge of some tropical storm/hurricane. That was tiring but fun...its not too often you get to be in a tiny boat looking a wall of water 2 stories tall.
