Junkyard Sightings

Postby SwedeSport » Mon Dec 17, 2012 1:14 pm

With the popularity of smart phones and instant picture sharing, I thought I would start a new thread where we could share our junkyard discoveries. Saabs are getting harder to come by in the yards. They turn them over and send them to the crusher before anyone knows they are even at the yard.

Hopefully this thread will help to connect people with the parts they need for projects,... before they are gone forever.

Feel free to post pictures of JYD oddities as well, and the occasional OMG,... I hope they survived pics.

Saw this at Harry's U Pull It in Pennsburg Pa over the weekend.
It's a 9-5 with a V6.

2 of the wheels are in perfect condition, 2 are bent/broken. All 4 tires are good.

It took a hard hit to the pass side rear. Pushed the side almost to the center of the car. Hopefully noone was in the rear seat when this happened.

The front passenger area is intact.

Holy shit. I've seen some really really badly crashed Saabs in person, but that is way up there. That's incredible.

Looks like both left side doors open?

the local SAAB junkyard .. they have about a dozen 99s left, tons more 900s / newer SAABs

last time I was there I disassembled a dash in 100+ degree heat to get a few parts I later got for free and still haven't fully installed :ranting:

They needed to be pried open, but the front cabin was intact, also notice that the airbags are not deployed.

Nice yard SalemSaab,... wish it wasn't so far for me to check out.

The early ones didn't have any front side-impact air bags. Those started in like 2001 or 2002, there are bags in the shoulders of the front seats. I don't think they ever got curtains though, unless those were added for the 2006+ redesign.

9-3 Sport Sedans deploy all the airbags and belt tensioners if you just look at them wrong....

When did they introduce the V6?

'99.

It's the same basic engine as the V6 NG900 and 9000 CDE's had, the NG900 it's a 2.5L N/A, in the 9000 it's 3.0 N/A, in the 9-5 it's 3.0L turbo. Same engine is in the Caddy Catera and a few Opel cars among other things.

The N/A ones are slugs, the 9-5 they drive decent, but require more maintenance than the B2x5's and make less power than the 4-cyl turbo in the Aeros. I avoid them.

wow - nice BBS wheels too :) At least it was just a V6 9-5.... back seat is always a safe place to put a baby seat. At least there's no remains of a seat being installed there. Scary shit. Wonder how BIG and how FAST the other car was going.

Wrong on that, all 9-5's had side impact air bags standard. My 99 base model has em.

I had a 00 Aero for a spell, and I got a big multi airbag discount on it.

It's just a shame they took it right back because she said it rates high on the frontal impact repair cost.

That's weird. My '99 Linear does not, there is no yellow airbag connector under the front seats and the original front seats didn't have them. I noticed when I swapped in Aero sport seats from an '05 into my car. Mine is just after the VIN # break that happened between MY98 and MY99 and was a dealer demo car. It has the later rear brake calipers and larger discs, etc.

Rod Beckner's place? My dad bought parts from him way back in the day. There are probably more 99s in that yard than in all of South Texas
