Never seen one either, but I had to make a bracket like that when I did the weber conversion to move the alternator down lower. The A/C was usually mounted on the exhaust side, but maybe this was for later cars?

BIRDIE,
That's an alternator mount from a later B motor. I had one in an '80 900 (no air conditioning). When I put the power steering pump and bracket from the '80 900 into my 99 I had to use that alternator mount because the pump bracket interfered with the regular alternator mount. They have bushings to dampen vibrations. They were on '80 900s, maybe '79 as well? (Drew can check his). I don't know if 99s ever got those mounts but my '80 99 has a typical alternator mount (but of course it could have been changed before I got the car).
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:

Not to offend anyone, but I think it was used on 79 and maybe 1980 B engines that had gear driven waterpumps. That bracket sat on top of the waterpump cover. I don't think it was associated with the side engine mount. I have a picture of the alternator mounted above the pump in the SAAB engine manual. Remember that 79 900's had that A/c compressor under the exhaust manifold. well that was the engine that used that alternator mount. I seem to rember that it was a single 70 amp unit and it had a single long 8mm bolt going thru the two bushings in the bracket.

OK, LUKE THANK YOU FOR THE PICTURE :yay:

THE EARLIER TYPE 'SOLID' MOUNT ALWAYS SUFFERS FROM METAL FATIGUE ACROSS THE BRACKETRY IN MY EXPERIENCE..... :ranting:

MAYBE THIS WAS AN EFFORT IN 'DAMPING' THE VIBRATIONS DOWN?

I EVEN HAD THAT COUNTERSUNK(ALTERNATOR MOUNT) BOLT,WORK LOOSE CAUSING ME A DAYS GRIEF,AND A HORRIBLE VIBRATION AT AROUND 2200 REVS.FITTING A NYLOC TO THE OTHER END OF THE BOLT SORTED THAT PROBLEM OUT.....

I ORIGINALLY ALSO THOUGHT,MAYBE IT WAS A TYPE OF MOUNT FOR THE B20 ENGINE DOWN THE SIDE OF THE BLOCK ON THE ENGINE MOUNT...... :silent: AS IN THIS PHOTO

My '79 doesn't have the bushings in the alternator mount, and has a Bosch alternator. Not the original alt though (BOSCH REBUILT sticker on top).

A rumor I heard was those motorola alternators caught fire a lot.

I haven't heard they catch fire, but they are well regarded as sucking. Mine is working but if it fails I'll go with a standard Bosch. The Bosch Alternators use a different tensioning arm and are clocked a little different than the motorola one too.

I'm glad my '73 had a Bosch already installed so I didn't have to worry about the SEV/Marchal one catching fire.

Just kidding! My '79 does have this bracket with the vibe isolating bushings.
