T5.x Unlocking

Postby 99Super » Mon Apr 18, 2016 4:02 pm

Who here can unlock the T5 ECU's?

I have a LAWCEL CAN-USB adapter and read/write w/ it, but I can't unlock ECU's and now that I have several extras, I'd like to unlock them.

I'm just thinking it may be easier for me to send them off to someone than to buy/learn how to use one of the combi-adapters out there.

My combi adaptor can apparently do it, though since I've never had the need I haven't looked into how exactly it works. If you don't have any luck finding anyone I'd be happy to try and read up on it and see if I could do it. I'm not the most Windows literate but I doubt its that tricky since I thought the BDM was a pretty rudimentary interface.

Or I could also lend you my combi adaptor for a bit if you wanted to learn how to do it yourself. I'm hoping to finally get my vert running on T5 in the next few weeks (months?) but I've already flashed the ECU for it so I hopefully won't need mine for a little bit...

When you want to re-program a T5 ecu (and maybe others), the RAM must be "unlocked" before you can flash a new program back to it. This cannot be done through the CAN system, but only through the BDM port. I think Luke even made a special jig so he doesn't have to solder on header pins.

Once the RAM is unlocked through the BDM, it is a simple process to read/write through the CAN using something like the LAWICEL CAN-USB adapter or the Johnc Combiadapter (that will also talk to the BDM) like Hutch is letting me borrow.
Hutch's is not working for me yet, I'm getting some error mssgs, maybe I'll have more time this weekend.

I have been working with the T5.2 ECU in Frank via CAN-USB, but that came to me unlocked.

It can definitely be done through the CAN system.

1. Open up your bin file, or download from ECU using T5CANFlasher (http://www.txsuite.org/) in T5Suite

2. Go to Actions -> Trionic options (firmware) in T5 Suite

3. Uncheck RAM Locked, Click OK, Close program

4. Use The T5CanFlasher to write program back to ECU

Doesn't work that way. BTDT. Many times.

Downloaded through the T5CANFlasher, unchecked box in T5Suite, saved, applied 15V and re-flashed through T5CANFlasher. Nada.

I can flash new programs all day long to my unlocked ECU, but if the box is still checked, no go.

TTBOMK, the ONLY way to perform that one specific function is through the BDM.

I would love to be wrong on this o_O

Thanks!

The one caveat is that you have to save the file outside of the Binaries directory. The binaries director in t5suite is a locked directory that will not actually save any changes. So if you reopen the binary and the box is rechecked, then you are trying to save the binary into that locked directory. Do a save-as on your desktop and the changes should stick. Other than that I'm not sure what the problem is, but I've done this literally hundreds of times.

OK, then that must be the issue. I've never heard of or read that before. I'll try it tonight!
(now I kinda want to run home at lunch and try it!)
Which adapter do you use, just curious?

Yeah it was one of those things I found out the hard way after many hours of frustration. :)

I have both Lawicel and Combi, but the Combi is new and I haven't used it yet. My first Lawicel just died on me after about 3 years of use and I just replaced that as well.

Thank You, Jordan! :rock on:

Glad to hear it. The CAN interface is great, I don't think I've had to use BDM in years.

I totally thought you meant you had 'bricked' the ECU's and needed to bring them back to life, which I believe can only be done via BDM. Regardless, hopefully you got a chance to play with the Combi and see if its worth investing in, though it sounds like the Lawicel may still work just fine...
