Electric Power Steering

At the Freezeout Hillclimb this past weekend, there was a 76 Capri w/ electric power steering from a Chevy Equinox/ Saturn Vue.
Has anyone done this yet? It's a bit clunky and would be a very tight fit under our dash, but it would be easier than installing a stock 99
rack w/ pumps, etc. After driving the BMW, I NEED PS!

This is something I'd like to get done before the end of the season so it will be ready for Maryhill Hillclimb/ORP trackday.

I'm just starting to dig into this, but if anyone has any resources they could point me at, it would be appreciated.

Nice to see traffic picking back up around here!

John

Graham Cullen has an electric steering column from a Saturn Vue installed in his 96 rally car.

I've done some thinking about this in the past. My thought is that the easier way to go would be to use the stock rack and add in column assist electronic power steering.

You can buy them for hotrods but they're pretty $. Looks like you can pull one from a junkyard Prius though.

Grahams is the Saturn Vue electric steering column. He has the earlier 96 steering rack which is 2.x turns lock to lock and he likes the setup. I think the Saturn Vue setup is well documented and proven at this point.

Hi guys

Im building this into my project 99 historic hill climb car, its a Opel Corsa C electric steering. I went this way as I have a special short steeringrack 2,5 turns from lock to lock, so a normal powersteering would not work.
I build it out of original 99 parts and the Corsa coluum, plus a coupl of costum brackets.

Thanks for the photo Jakob!

That's a good looking setup!

It looks very similar to what I have in mind. I may lose the turn signal/wiper stalks in favor of the 2:1 quickener as I don't have such a quick rack.
I'll have to see how much room I have.

These guys seems to have a lot of the adapters, etc., that I'll likely need...

What steering wheel quick release did you use? I'll probably do that upgrade while I am in there.

Hi John

Thanks for the nice words :-)
My quick release is a cheep one from Ali Express, that I costumized a bit ;-)

There is not much room left under the dash, if you want a 2:1 quickner in there as well, but what the hell, go for it
