It is really dirty. Will take a buffing wheel to it to see if any paint is revealed

Saturday was a long busy day. When I finally made it down to the "Field" Jon was already towing a car back to the shop so I set to digging out the next car. My memory is already a little hazy on the order of things but we ended up extracting 3 cars on saturday.

After we bring each car back we throw a battery in to see what still works. In most cases a few lights come on or the wipers or the engine may even crank over. I think it was the cleanest 5 door that we tried the battery in. the electric mirrors worked, a lot of the lights worked etc. I was standing at the battery and saw a wire coming from the starter...so I touched it to the pos terminal and the car cranked...unfortunately it was in first gear and my right foot was in front of the rf wheel. I just missed running over my foot  After that Jon jumped in and turned the ignition on and popped the car into neutral. I hit the starter again and the engine fired to life for a couple of seconds...much to our amazement. a couple of more bumps on the starter and the engine came to life and continued to run. So we filled the cooling system with water and fired it back up...then managed to drive the car into the bone yard. There was a an exhaust manifold leak and I think it was only running on a couple of cylinders...likely due to plugged CIS injectors....the 15 year old gas probably didnt help much either.

Last night I dropped off some wheels and tires (you run out of good tires in a project like this). Jon informed me that he will be keeping all of the 99's so thats done with

I see a future for 4 of the cars...the future for the other 5 involves an aggressive weight reduction scheme followed by a severe space limiting scheme and then a brief but hot reintroduction to the steel industry :yay:

That 15yr old gas is probably better than what you would get at the pump today.

Since Jon is keeping all the cars, does that mean no parts will be available for sale to the rest of us?

It would suck to see the parts I have been searching for disappear into a box for another 15 years.

Did you call Central Grade in Lewiston? They have parts from a 1974 they broke down last year and two 1971 nearly complete with your windshield rubber. They're asking $100 to smash the windshield on 2402 and retrieve the rubber for you. I'm sure they'd be happy to pull any other parts you'd want. Call them, they're good people happy to sell you parts off these cars.

At that price it needs to be really nice... Almost perfect. Besides I still think that if the car is going to scrap, they cut the A pillars carefully enough and lift the roof, they could save both the glass and the gasket.

If you are taking a trip to that yard any time soon, get some closeup pics of the gasket for me.

I was kidding of course about Jon keeping all the cars. if you are careful you can get the windshield out and save the gasket in the process.

Scrap prices are down, might be worth it to sit on the cars you plan to recycle. I just took a load to the scrap yard this morning and they were only paying 8.00/100lb for light scrap. It was 12/100 on my previous trip last fall.
