Saab 99 motorsport quality engine mounts

Postby sonett » Wed Nov 18, 2009 11:07 am

I have been asked by some Swedish enthusiasts if i can supply the uprated mounts again, i now have enough interest to have another small batch made. The cost will be £75 for the front mount. I can also supply the two uprated side mounts, a complete kit will cost £93. All bolts/washers/nylocs are also included. Postage will also need to be added.
If there is any interest send a PM or email.

The side mounts are just a larger version of the rubber cushion insert that is in the front mount.

I have had these mounts on my car since 2007 ans so have a few other owners.

Those looks very nice though

Thank you! Apart from being nice they also do a very good job of controlling the engine/box movement. Could you post up a pic of your S&R mounts?

I am very interested in the tranny (front) mount. Not so sure what I am doing for side mounts yet. My 99 is a 71 model and I am putting in a 16v turbo. Been 10 years since the 99 motor (1.7) went into the scrap pile. Dont even recall what the original mounts looked like. Anyone got any pics of their 99 16v conversions, and how the mounts were dealt with? I was figuring on fabbing something up to replace the original setup. It would help alot to see what others have done.

Sonett, what form of payment can you accept for the front mount?

The hockey pucks that Geoff posted are what I was referring to. We stack two on top and drill a hole through the center for the side mounts. The front mount uses one puck in the original mount. They work very well, are cheap, and transmit less vibration then steal or aluminum.

I don't have any pics of 16v 99 conversions, but it's very easy to do. For the engine mount on the oil filter side of the engine you just swap it for the original 99 mount. The mount on the exhaust side requires some cutting/welding, the bottom part of the bracket is used from the 99, the bracket that fits from the rubber cushion to the cylinder needs to be adjusted by cutting and welding.
So therefore the mounts i am supplying will fit a 99 16v conversion.

As for payment, i suppose paypal would be easiest, but add 4% for charges.

You can also just run the earlier style 900 barrel mounts (non hydraulic) for the sides. All you have to do is drill the new mount holes where the 99 mounts go. Airsweden did this on one of his cars and everything looks to have lined up properly.

The Hot Rod crowd run solid mounts on their big V-8s? I was reading in a Mustang forum that they essentially bolt the motor solid to the frame, and the only real drawback is vibration and noise thru the body. For a car that is gonna see absolutely no street time, I dont see what the big deal is? I would think it would stiffen the front end of a Saab dramatically. I expect my 99 to be street legal, but barely. Maybe just the occasional rip around the backroads near my house.

I can see the slight advantage of using solid mounts, but mostly it's not worth it, on some rally cars with 3 mounting points one of the mounts is solid, but not always.
You have to be careful when using solid mounts, you need to check the mounts regularly for fatigue and cracks, but sometimes it's not always possible to see the cracks and then maybe it's too late.
The front sheet metal where the front mount fastens on the 99 is prone to fatigue around the threaded bolt holes. Of course this needs to be addressed if damaged. The company that helped design and make the mount also make competition parts for modern cars and the Peugeot cup cars, so i took their advice and we decided that to use 'escort mk2' type mounts would be the best way to go in terms of ease of fitting and reduction of engine/box movement and not forgetting cost!
I understand the attraction of using the ice hockey pucks, easy to obtain and very cheap, i am not one for trying to 're-invent the wheel' so i always try to find out about other peoples experiences and try to gain some help from this, after all, one of my favourite quotes is 'history has to repeat itself, it has to, nobody listens'. If you also look at the works rally cars you will notice that even they used rubber cushions.

I think sonetts mounts look awesome, just a bit too much for me with the exchange rate + shipping etc. I'm wondering if I could just make a plate (or two plates - one to reinforce the sheet metal first) in the stock diamond shape and just sit a solid rubber bushing on that with a bolt through it? It look look similar to sonetts but have a steel base without all the fancy radius bottom. It would just be flat.

The front mount on my rally car uses the stock mount with the rubber pieces replaced by Delrin. The body is reinforced with another layer of steel. The side mounts are aluminum.

This combination works very well. The only minor side effect is that anyone inside gets to have their joints and muscles liquefied.
