Fuel tank overflow hose grommet
Hey guys, looking for a source for fuel-rated rubber grommets for where the overflow hose meets the gas tank in a 1980 900. The grommet was used all the way up to 86 I believe. It's right next to the filler hose, and the hose is about an inch and a half wide. At the end of the hose is a plastic fitting that goes into a hole in the tank, and the grommet is where the fitting meets the tank. Mine has crumbled and causes the cockpit to smell like gas all the time. Tried looking all over the place and can only find regular rubber that crumbles within days, so it has to be fuel rated rubber.
Any ideas? Thanks.

I bought one on line for my '80 99, I think it came the Saabsite. Had the same problem and that fixed it, I'll be the 900 item is the same one.

You don't happen to know the part number or description, do you? It's for the overflow hose that's like 1.5" thick.

I don't, thinking about it now though its probably not the right piece, I think it was a lot smaller than that one... Mcmaster perhaps?

I would have thought a late 99 combi coupe would have a similar hose but don't recall one that size, more like 1" O/D.
Does the tank look like this one (bottom, assuming it's a plastic tank):

That looks different. The 900 tank has just a hole where that 1" extension comes out on the rear pass side of the tank. Then the hose goes to a plastic fitting that sticks into the hole in the tank, surrounded by the grommet in question. I'll try to post a pic.
The tank changed in like '83 or so, but still had the same hose setup, but moved it over to the right a little. Changed the tank again in '87 I believe and deleted the fitting and grommet and went with an extension that the hose clamps onto - like the one in the picture.
I found a fresh '86 in the junkyard this weekend with the grommet still in tact and installed it. Definitely cut down the smell. Just hope the trunk isn't full of gas again next time i fill up. That's always the real test.

Bump
Anyone had any luck with finding the grommet for the overflow hose on the 900? Or one that fits? The junkyard parts are pretty often in terrible shape, although though I did JB weld one recently and that seems to be holding...

Re: Fuel tank overflow hose grommet
I ended up just collecting them from every junkyard car I could find. They used the hose up until like '90 when they went to a different style tank and eliminated that grommet. I ended up finding one that was in great shape and it stopped leaking. Now it leaks somewhere else - fuel comes right out the filler housing when i take sharp corners going uphill. I think it goes back to a valve or flap inside the tank that is no longer intact.
I have heard you can still get them new, though I never tried calling a dealer. My next step would have been to get a part number off a bad one and call.

Re: Fuel tank overflow hose grommet
I bought a similarly sized grommet from McMaster (actually a bag of them). It wasn't quite the right size and I had a bear of a time getting it into my '80 99. I got it in and think it will work but it isn't as secure as the original. If you find a part #....
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off
Re: Fuel tank overflow hose grommet
I have this same problem myself (gas smell filling the cabin). I'd like to get a good part sourced as well.

Is everyone that has this problem driving an early c900? Mine's in the '80 c900T. Never had the problem in any of my others.

My 89 turbo sedan stinks like gas in the interior when I top off the tank, but I just deal with it. Never really investigated the problem.

Probably a good reason not to start smoking.

I kicked that habit almost 10 years ago, so I think I'm safe.
