You are not the only one looking for them.
I wouldn't mind having a set myself.
I would love to have a type 8 while I'm at it.

Call Brad S. at KC Saab. He used to be involved with circle track racing Saab 900s, but I believe he's not doing it anymore. Still, if anyone can point you in the right direction, it'd be him.

The guys at Scanwest in Seattle have been a big help to me lately finding mechanical parts for the old cars - sold me a diff for my brother's '93 9000 Aero for $100, B-motor distributor for $50, etc. Try them, they still do C900 gearboxes.

Is there a C900 gearbox de-coder ring somewhere for us newbs? I have no idea what a type 4, 5, 7 or 8 gearset is? All I konw is that I have an 88 900 with no 2nd gear syncro and I'd love to get a replacement box at some point then find an LSD down the road.

The primaries are the 2 sprockets in the chain transfer drive. There are 4 different ratios, 4-5 were in 4 spds, and 6-7 were in 5 spds. There were Competition Dept. units made, but they are ultra rare.
LSDs are tough to find. I heard that 9k diffs can be made to work in a C900.

Seconded. Scanwest has a soft spot for the older Saabs and has quite a collection of goodies. They built me a bomb-proof 4 speed and also built up a five speed in a chillcast case with LSD for me.

Yes early 9k diff can be made to work, but requires a little machining. Both are still available (c900 and 9k) but the 9k was significantly cheaper at the time so I made that work.
Ideally you want an 89+ gearset as they can hold a little more power.
I seriously don't trust anyone who says they can build a bomb proof 4-speed unless they are using the competition gearset.
Search the forum for "primaries" and there is a pretty good breakdown of what each number translates to. You can sort of mix and match them to get a desired final ratio. Basically the lower the number, the higher the ratio i.e. the shorter the gearing.
You can also check out this gearset calc I made to look at how different calculations affect shift points. http://saabgears.heroku.com/

It all comes down to your definition of "bomb-proof" then. Those are my words, not theirs. I used it to say a very well built box where all parts were carefully inspected and chosen, then magnafluxed, shot peened, and then assembled by a man with decades of experience in rally and motorsport.
To your point, the owner (and the aforementioned builder) would likely tell you the same thing. As I understand it, they just got into the habit of rebuilding boxes for each race.

+1 for Scanwest, been going to them for years, including for a number of gearboxes and related parts.
Re: type 4 or 5 primary gearsets wanted
I know I have a spare set of cogs, not sure about chains, I will see what I can come up with. Also the 4-5 tensioner is different as well.

I know the tensioner is different but im 90% sure I have used/modified the stock 5 gear tensioner to work.
