$1500 sounds about right for a R&P based on people who have acquired them in the past. I do not know where they got them but like anything I am sure they can be arranged with various gear maker companies.

The current market seems to get around $5000 to $7500 for a complete used good condition NA competition gearbox and around $10,000 for a 4 chain primary big gearbox.

Yeah, I'll have to do some cleaning of this thread , just waiting to see where it goes ;) The R&P are currently available from Sweden. Sets vary in cost a lot but much of that is due to homologation issues that we don't really deal with in this country. I You should be able to source a decent gearbox for ~ 5-6k. The good part about it, unlike tires is that it should hold its value pretty well, not really a wear item...just don't run them out of oil.

Quaife makes sequential gearboxes for other applications. Maybe someone should hit them up, to see if its possible to do one for a Saab.

I am sure they could build us a whole gearbox for less than $500,000

New ring and pinions are 9,174 SEK (without VAT) + shipping.
There is a manufacturer in Sweden that has made straight cut gear sets and could make more.

I've been thinking about having the 4 chain primary and upper bearing support reproduced but haven't had time to deal with it recently.

The sequential boxes they currently produce seem to be around 3-7k pounds.

I have opened a dialog with Mark @ Quaife.

You are already talking about spending 10k to build a box,.. its worth asking them what it would take.

It looks that spread around the forum (a lot in this thread) and with people's experiences there is almost a step by step T5 instructional... Just a thought for someone with any amount of time, and the knowledge to help those of us struggling :help: to take in all the information :hungry:

They are also going to be videotaping the SOC seminar I'm doing and I can post the powerpoint slides as well. Time is short at the moment!

3-7k pounds would be way to heavy for our Saabs. All that extra weight on the front would make them understeer like crazy. Those must be some really strong boxes if they weight that much.

Last time I looked into having the local gear maker make a set of the 4 speed S&R helical gears it was going to be $8000 just for the cutter and tools to make the single piece cluster gear. A straight cut set would be much cheaper but that just the gearset. To have a company make a completely custom gearbox for a saab 900/99 from scratch I would wager the cost would be beyond the entire websites collective savings. We have custom machines made at work all the time that are much much simpler than a gearbox and we routinely spend between $50,000 and $250,000 to have them done.

Does anyone have any cutaway drawings, or technical drawings of a Saab gearbox?

Quaife would want to do at least 20-30 boxes to justify production, but seem to think that under 10k is possible.

They say the easiest route would be to use the stock case, but want to see one before determining what can be done.

if you can use the stock case your cost savings will be considerable as it changes the entire development from creating a completely new gearbox to creating new internals. Of course we then come full circle in that we already can get new internals to fit into a stock case.

Are they talking a sequential gearset?

Yes sequential.

I was just figuring that if the cost was similar, it would be worth looking into.

Although selling 20-30 at 10k each is a problem too.

This one looks like it could fit a 9-3, 9-5 type layout, http://quaife.co.uk/shop/products/qbe32g

Doesn't help a C900 or 99 though...
