I have an original and found to be a wonderful tool in Saab maintenance. It does not slip like the slotted ones for sale on the bay.
I have only seen one of these for sale ever, and that is how I got this one.
Anybody interested in purchasing reproductions? I can set up and do a production run.
The genuine is on the left. My reproduction prototype is on the right.
Built utilizing a genuine Saab 99 starter ring.

I have a chunk of the toothed starter ring off an old flywheel that I use. It does the job, but falls out and sometimes even gets behind the flywheel.
I might be interested in one if the price is right. It would be a step up.

Falling behind the flywheel. That's no good.
Price depends on how many I do in a run. Initial guess would be 40 usd, shipped in the contiguous USA.
Thanks for the appreciation for nice tools.

Dennis, I am certainly in for one... As you know, I had plans to make a few sets up myself but have been busy with other projects.

If anyones interested in a DYI version of this and had a welder.... and has a C-900 automatic trans flex plate on hand, you can pretty easily make about 30 of these from it.
I for one really like Jon's solution, I will be using this one in the future!

So if you had a welder, do you just rub the pieces of steel together?
I have a TIG welder, skill to weld, materials, and have the time to build these, so I'm giving an opportunity for others to purchase.
FYI, you can only get 15 parts from a starter ring.
Jon's solution seems to work. Personally I would only use it in a pinch. Looks like it all the load goes into only one tooth on the starter ring and you will have to reset it when you go to torque down the crank bolt.
It does look like Jon has a lift. I must be getting old, but I would rather work above the car than laying on the floor.

Re: Reproduction special tool 8392987 Flywheel Lock
I usually get a buddy to jam a flat blade screwdriver against the starter snout in a flywheel tooth, haven't broken a tooth yet, but have been meaning to buy / make one of these so I can do more on my own. That and an early brake caliper piston wrench, can't find mine and they stopped showing up on eBay consistently.
I might be interested, otherwise ill go in on half a ring gear with DeLo!

Just make a run of 25. Whatever you can't sell here you can throw up on SaabCentral, Ebay and elsewhere.

Re: Reproduction special tool 8392987 Flywheel Lock
I made one from an old auto ring gear years ago and a spacer from an exhaust manifold but mine looks like crap compared to yours.I didnt put the extra meat around the spacer either, any idea what that is for ?
Its a pretty useful tool so dont see why you wouldnt sell all you can make really.
Are you going to plate them ?

Not all of them have that extra "meat" on them. I have a factory stamped one and it doesn't have that. I think it is a great idea, I thought of the same thing, in fact I was going to bring it to a production tool maker to see if they would make them.
