Worked on a welding jig tooling last night. If I'm going to build these I want to make an accurate product with consistency. Also speeds up the process for fit up and tacking.
Ill post some pixs. Once the design is done it is all about the tooling.
I just copied Saabs original tool so I think the extra meat keeps the tube from distorting from repeated dealer use.

Nicely done. I remember chocking when I paid for my ebay locking tool and was out $55. This is a great little tool and I think it is worth reproducing. Once you get this done you can copy the big clutch compressor tool. That is definitely something that needs to be redone.

Yeah, I can't even remember how many times I borrowed Scanwest's clutch compressor before Dennis showed me the jacking bolt method. With that trick, I can live without the factory compressor, but it would still be a nice one to have.

Tools to build tools.
This is a very simple jig, but will make life under the welding hood much nicer.
3/4" plate with a .760 dia counter bore .375 depth.

Ready for tacking. When I do the production run I will make the tube a bit longer to create a fillet weld with the starter ring.

could you take some photos with it mounted on in place on the engine for use? We looked at the factory setup in the manual last night and it looked like it was kind of a pain to use.

I can do that.
In brief, I actually do not use the factory location where the retaining bolt threads into the starter plate.
I pull the 12mm dia bolt common to the block and throttle body strut. Then I use a 8mm dia bolt (3 1/2" long) and nut to retain the lock tool.
A picture will make it apparent.

As promised, pictures.

In this case the clutch cover is removed, but you can loosen the lower attach point and flex the cover to get the lock and bolt in place.

Production run 8392987 Flywheel Lock

Postby squaab99t » Sat Aug 03, 2013 10:07 am

Got after it last night and into the morning. I was all setup and the torch was hot.
photo (11).JPG

Tacked parts on the right and the finished weldment on the left.
Originally I intended to use the jig only for tacking. I ended up using it to hold the part steady while I completed all the beads. It worked especially well when the "top hat" was upside down and kept the part perpendicular to the table.
It is all about position...

Okay these are ready to ship. Someone asked about plating. Too small of a batch to make it worthwhile for a shop to do. Looked at some do it yourself zinc or cad copy kits but the minimum is about $200 without the power source. I can do a wrinkle black power coat for a $10 up charge on top of the $40 base part.
Pm if you are ready to buy.
