Re: GROUP BUY: Sport and Rally Seat Skins
I'd try to keep the corduroy if at all possible. Kind of the point of a reproduction in my opinion. I doubt these are going to take the daily driver abuse that the originals took..

I think thin corduroy will probably hold up better than fat corduroy. At least that's been my experience with pants....
Are you making these for the sliding headrest or pop-out headrest? The set I let you borrow are for the sliding headrest. I don't think I've ever seen any for the pop-out headrest in person.
I've seen these with with both the '80's "SAAB" logo and with the "Sport and Rally" logo.

I'd really prefer to go as original as possible, so I'm going to ask for cord. Geoff, I was thinking the same thing while looking at a pair of thin cords the other day - they hold up a lot better. I'll ask my upholster about it if I can find him.

I think corduroy matching the original will be fine as it a) will match the original and b) will last plenty long enough. The ones I have are probably 30 years old and they are worn out...but they are 30 years old and lived hard lives. If you got 10 years out of a seat cover I think you would be more than happy.

Re: GROUP BUY: Sport and Rally Seat Skins
Just curious, what are the 'flaps' made out of on the seat upright? A little bit of foam sewed in, I assume?
As for material, I'd vote suede but I'm sure that would up the cost a bit and corduroy would definitely be retro cool. I know its early on in the process but would we be able to pick colors or would it likely be a batch all in the same color?

Re: GROUP BUY: Sport and Rally Seat Skins
Good question. It would likely be cheaper to have just one color since they can order the material in bulk, but I'll find out. I'm planning on the black cord with white trim for my '80, but love the look of the white and even the yellow, though I've never even seen it in any pictures other than the one in the first post which was from one of the accessories catalogs.
The back supports are just wedges of foam surrounded by cord. I think they are the coolest part!

They actually made them with different pile (size) cord. The whiteish/blue ones I loaned you have a thin cord and aren't worn out fully. A friend of mine bought a set like the black/white set and they had high pile cord. The cord wiped right off as soon as he sat on them, it was unbelievable. But, they were 20 years old at the time.
Black wouldn't be bad but I've got a hankering for blue or red...

Subscribed! My 85 is screaming for new seats. This could be a pretty cool opportunity. Definitely curious to hear more as you start researching. The cord would be interesting...
