For sale: 1973 Saab 99 Notchback Road Race Project - $X,XXX

Postby DrewP » Fri Mar 10, 2017 6:08 pm

Edit 11/7/2017 - Entertaining offers, original asking was $6k. I can negotiate if you're interested and motivated to take this on, and will especially negotiate if you are interested in the spares I've collected. Think reduced from original asking with lots of spares.

This has been a hard decision to make, but I have not had the motivation or made the time to work on this car anymore, and am hoping that someone who knows and wants the car might want to tackle the last few things that it needs to get it driving again! I have had this car for close to 10 years.

As it sits now I'm listing it for $6,000, somewhat negotiable, especially if you are interested in spares as listed at the end.

I would put the car as being between 90-95% complete, and all of the hard fabrication and custom work is already done. Almost everything that's left can be done with bolt-on parts.

The extensive build thread is here on Saabrally.com and documents almost everything that has been done to the car from start to finish, with fabrication and modification notes, parts interchanges, and build details.

An extensive photo album of the car's current condition is here.

All of the fabrication and mechanical work was done by myself or my brother. I used to be a professional Saab technician, and all of the work was done to a very high standard using only OEM and old-stock parts, some of which were very hard to find.

Pertinent details:
-Rust free 1973 Saab 99 LE notchback body still wearing original paint, 1973-only Brilliant Yellow, code Y9
-Clean and clear California title on non-operation, with no back fees
-Extensive body lightening (door skins, undercoating, polycarbonate windscreen and windows)
-Custom hand fitted fully tig-welded 4130 chrome-moly roll cage built to FIA-253 (stage rally) specification
-Fresh rebuilt with zero miles N/A B202 twin-cam engine, firewall clearanced to accomodate larger footprint engine
-Fresh rebuilt with zero miles GM 456-06 5-speed transmission
-Fidanza 9 lb aluminum flywheel with 6-puck Clutchnet clutch
-Fresh non-power steering rack
-Complete suspension with all brand new bushings and balljoints, and vented disc brakes and calipers from 1991 Saab 900 Turbo
-Lowered ride height road racing suspension setup with new Bilstein B6 dampers and Intrax springs from Saab 900
-Two Bimarco Expert racing seats with valid FIA-8855 safety stickers

The car as it sits now weighs 1,850 pounds.

The car still needs the following to be made running:
-Cooling system (radiator, fans, hoses, engine oil cooler)
-Fuel delivery system (pump or pumps, fuel lines)
-Fuel injection system - I have parts to set it up to run on Saab Trionic5 fully sequential engine management system
-Exhaust system
-Pedal box and brake lines (Some fabrication required, brake master cylinders, clutch master cylinder, throttle and throttle cable, I was going to use Tilton or Wilwood racing components)
-Wiring - I have a complete Saab 900 body wiring harness that fits almost perfectly to wire the lights that is included

I also have extensive spare parts available at negotiable additional cost since I intended to race this car, including but not limited to:
-Exterior lights
-Exterior mirrors
-Glass, including original front windows, windshield, rear window)
-Extra set of Ronal 8-spoke wheels
-Lightly used racing slicks
-Suspension hard parts (front control arms, hubs, complete rear axle, power steering rack that could be adapted)
-Brakes (new rotors, pads, spare calipers)
-Additional suspension springs and dampers in various rates
-Extra engine (turbocharged if desired)
-Extra transmissions and transmission parts
-Clutches, flywheels, engine sensors, halfshafts, stock and modified ECU's, etc etc etc.

Bump, thought I had an interested buyer who stopped contacting me, I'll negotiate the price, just want to see this car go to someone who would use it. The lady and I are downsizing our lives, and it doesn't make sense for me to have this anymore. :'-(

If no one on here bites you should get it looking as clean as possible, take some good photos of it, and list in on BAT. you might get some bites there. I'd love another race/rally car project that I wont get to work on for years to come but i have enough now :)

I did contact BAT actually when I initially posted it, and if I keep getting no interest that's probably what I'll do next. When it was circulating around Facebook it got picked up by a few of the other Saab sites, but I only had one very half-hearted potential buyer contact me. Great suggestions though to get it looking better.

Now on eBay, with reserve lower than my original asking price. Turns out buying a house is more important than finishing an awesome race car right now. :bawl:

Man, I'd love to complete that for vintage racing. Unfortunately not in the cards...

I know what you mean!

Dammit, I just realized I should have made the opening price $73.99.... oh well.

Edit: Hah. It let me edit it. That made me happy inside.

Wonder how it would stack up with 2002's, Alfas and Porsches?

It would be the tail-happiest FWD car on the track for sure, for one thing. The weight distribution without fuel and battery (which I was planning to mount as far back as possible) is like 65Front/35Rear. Light as hell though.

Cool! Come join me and we can do pirouettes together!

Please, somebody buy this car! They really are cheap, competent, FAST track-day cars...

Plus, they get a surprising amount of attention. From old guys who know what they are to kids who have no idea

2002's don't stand a chance! I'm usually competitive with the BRZ crowd.
Most cars handle a bit better, but a light 99 16V w/ T5 has piles of power.
An easy 250 hp in a 2100 lb car...
