Lot of C900 transmissions for sale at scrap metal price

Postby formulasaab » Tue Feb 27, 2018 3:36 pm

Bill Jacobson of Sports Car Service (in Wilmington, DE) is trying to clean up his shop. He says to me "Stefan, you're an internet guy" and asks if I would be willing to put it "out there" that he would let all his C900 transmissions and used parts go for 50 cents/lb.

He can get 30 cents/lb. for them as complete gearboxes and 50 cents/lb. for the aluminum if he separates it out. So he literally is selling them at scrap value.

I looked at the pile. There is at least 50 units, probably more like 60. Some are good, some are not good. They may be labelled, they may not. No one knows. Included in the deal are a pile of gears and bits already removed from transmissions that he's disassembled over the years.

I thought of this group first, since who goes through parts faster than racers?

The only catch is that you have to take it all. No picking and choosing. He just wants to see something actually DONE with the parts that will help keep cars on the road. He can't stand to see it all go to scrap. Some of it will go to scrap, most surely, but not all of it, please.

You can call and talk to Bill directly if you want (302-764-SAAB), or you can write to me and I can try and help. Either way will probably work.

Seems like a valuable stockpile to keep in the family given that these parts will only get scarcer. of course the challenge is transporting 12000 pounds of transmissions somewhere :)

It's a good thing that you can stack them 4-5 high!

Very valuable indeed, that is a really nice offer to get them to someone who can make use.

Probably the way something like this works is if there are several people interested in taking them then people meet there on the same day with trucks and each take away a chunk of them so that they are all removed at the same time but maybe not such a burden for everyone. I'm not signing up for this ;)

I'd love a few more transmissions, but I'm about 2300 miles too far away.

I'm sure that if multiple trips were required, Bill wouldn't mind.

Yeah Drew, most of them are currently stacked 6 to a pallet (chains facing out) and 3 or 4 pallets high.

If I lost my job tomorrow, I'd teach myself to rebuild C900 gearboxes the day after tomorrow and then flood the market with cheap rebuilt gearboxes. At least it would keep me busy for a while.

Did any one get these transmissions? I bought eleven transmissions, mostly cores, from Donnie Stauffer.

I don’t think anyone has taken Bill up on his offer yet.

If I remember correctly , a 5 speed gear box is about 120 pounds. So @ .50 cents pound that's $60.00 each X 60 units = $3600.00
So 120 pounds X 60 units + 7200 pounds.
So you need $3600 + gas money and a car trailer and a bunch of big ratchet straps. Then Bill needs to have a fork lift to help load them on a trailer.
Then you need to have space to store them and space to clean and repair some of them.
Sounds like a job for some of the younger guys.
I'll be glad to train anyone that is serious about trans building. I have a little experience . LOL
