Nice place you got here...

Postby Darth Blomqvist » Thu Aug 18, 2011 9:23 pm

Hey all,

I have to admit I have visited this site on a weekly basis for about a year or so now…. So, I figure it’s about time to offer a proper salutation.

What a great place to procrastinate and day dream…. 99’s, Notchbacks, stroker motor build talk, Shelby rims, rally picks, crazy engine stands, roll cages, Snakes Malone and his jive ass banter! You guys are great.

Like most of you here if I could race cars 24/7 I would. The only minor catch that seems to be in that equation is the whole time and money thing… But I get it in where and when I can and I’m happiest trying to make a front heavy saab 900 buffalo go faster than the little Hondas, VWs, and miatas that frequent the road racing, circle track, and ice racing realms I’ve participated in.

As far as love of cars goes I’m all over the board. I grew up working on Alfas, Lancias, saabs, volvos, and diesels… The saab 900 is probably one of the best winter highway and back road companions I can think of, and every time I think of getting a modern car that a ‘normal’ person would drive, I keep coming back.

These days I pay the bills with a waste cooking oil to biodiesel company so my every day car is usually some variation of a Mercedes diesel with well over 300k running on grease. But I do have a hand full of saabs in various states hanging around. The most recent additions are Mr. Teresco’s two notch backs. One being the original car that Josh was ice racing when I met him up at Wells Lake for my first ice race. If you have never experienced ice racing, and your a saab guy or gal I think it is a must. As a very hung over college Freshman I was left speechless when I saw the tube frame, winged, and wild machines that showed up to chop up the ice and create a really nice track for us Street Legal guys and our studdless tires.

I also have a SCCA ITB saab 900 that I own and race with my good buddy Matt Nelson and will hope to get it out to the 4 hour this October at the Glen (possibly blowing it off to run the 24 hour chump car race at Nelson?). Some of you may know this car its yellow and was built by Ron Wilcox, and then it went to Len Schrader before Matt and I bought it. I also owned Nat Wentworth’s (of Errikson Indusrys/great guy) white ITB 900 for about 3 full days until Matt rolled it at NHIS…

Some of you may know my old uncle, Jim Moncrief of Sobstory.com from Flemington, NJ. Or if you found yourself at any of the New England circle tracks I the late 80’s to the late 90’s you might have seen a black 900 with orange numbers on it always starting last and eating up every Pinto, Escort, 4cly Mustang, Rabbit, Sirocco, and K car that was out there leaving them all to scratch their heads as he won week after week. He can now be found racing spec miatas, and vintage racing old MGB’s. And by the way, Luke I think you stopped by once and blew him and my good buddy away with your rally car! I distinctly remember the phone conversation I had with him after. Something like “this kid, he just showed up, and it was like he just drove here from completing a stage rally in the 70’s”. I think he also gave you the Weber header he had on a shelf for years for a 8 valve??!!! If you ever want to get rid of it I am looking for one so I can race up here at two circle tracks that won’t allow injected cars…

Well all I’m looking forward to getting to know some of you guys here, and hopefully meeting some of you out on a track, ice, or dirt somewhere! I’m also hoping to expand my racing experience to rally and hilclimbing, so If any of you in the northeast needs some crew please let me know. I think the VT rally is coming up and I would love to crew for anyone who would like another hand.

cheers,
kip moncrief

Welcome Kip. Those cars looks pretty cool. All of the MSS goodies on my 99 came from Ron Wilcox as well as Luke's second rally shell. I also got to drive BOTH of those notchbacks you have from JT.

Mt. Ascutney hillclimb is mid september and I might be going to that. Sounds like our rally season is over, but be sure to come out next year. Also put me on the list if you're going to be doing any LeMons races near by.

Darth Blomquist: Awesome name

Welcome! Snakes talks about you sometimes, I think he has a man-crush.

Where are you located, western MA?

So what are the plans for the ex-Snakes 2drs?

Hey guys,

Thanks for the hardy welcome all.

I live in New Haven, Ct. However, all of the cars live in Suffield, Ct. at my parent’s house which is about 25 min south of Springfield, Ma. If any of you are in the area drop me a line I would love to meet up.

The Ex-Snakes 912’s are just keeping each other company behind my father’s garage. I really wanted to fix the teal green one up, but the repaired-rot is just to much, and the front right frame rail is just to far out of whack to ever get the car right. Alas any project can be completed, but I think I will just harvest all of the Snakes go fast parts and wait out a notchback rust free shell or put in all into my rat rod convert (slammed with a 3 inch chop out of the a piller)… I will be stripping it during September down to the bone. The remains will then make their way up to Claude Hutchings where I believe he wants the roof line to make a new chump/lemons race car out of a convertible (with a notch roof). As for the ex- Hutchings tube frame car… I am going to have some fun trying to make it even lighter with full fenders and hood as a removable fiberglass nose, and possibly a fiberglass roof. I hope to run it at a rally cross or two, and try out some home made tiers on the ice. For you local guys I would love to let you all have some fun in it too, whether it is on the dirt or the ice. After I get my fill it will probably be moving on… Who knows maybe someone in this community will want it.

I’m currently just trying to get my SCCA ITB car to run right. Ron Wilcox had the 8v motor in it, then Len Schrader had the 16v put in it but they spliced the 16v harness in the 8v and it has some electrical demons that I am trying to sort out.

Cheers

We should definitely get together sometime. I'm probably 45 minutes or so from Suffield and same from New Haven. I'd love to give the tube car another run at a rallyX too!

Hey Kip,

Welcome here and needless to say you fit perfectly in. I really like your yellow 900 and I'm with 99super, the Mercedes is absolutely awesome. I think it's a W120/121 isn't it? That's the time when Mercedes used to build good cars.

That's a sick benz. Almost incredible how a solid chunk of iron like that can get around a track. :-D
