Looking at a 1974 99

Postby kuponut » Sun Sep 02, 2012 4:29 pm

Hello there.

I'm looking at buying a 1974 99 and such. The only SAAB I have ever owned is my current first car, a 1990 900.

The owner had bought the car around a year ago I think, they immediately put it on their trailer and took it over to a friend's house who let them store the car there. It is still on that trailer. The person the owner bought the car from described the issue as:
I lost the ability to get into each gear in succession. In the end I could not get it out of reverse. It could be the clutch master cylinder - when I pressed on the pedal the rod at the clutch slave did not move

A leak anywhere in the master cylinder to the hose to the slave cylinder would have caused this and such, correct?

The master cylinder type is http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/dr ... h/1016155/

The slave cylinder type is http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/dr ... h/1020532/

What needs to be done is to get the car off of the owner's trailer. The car is currently parked on the trailer in reverse.

What measures would be recommended to get the car out of gear?

When I replaced the Slave cylinder and Clutch stuff on my 900, I was able to add more brake fluid and temporarily get the leaky slave to build enough pressure to depress the pressure plate.

Is it possible to somehow pull the lever going from the Slave to the release bearing towards the front of the car to depress the pressure plate, or is this stupid and could damage the lever?

What I was looking into was getting rebuild components for both the master and slave.

I used a skandix PDF file to get some of the part numbers for components, they listed:
89-93-156 Clutch Master Rebuild Kit
89-86-622 Clutch Master Replacement Spring

83-80-065 Clutch Slave Kit
87-11-368 Clutch Slave

I found the Clutch Master Rebuild Kit and Replacement Spring part numbers listed at Jimellissaab website...
http://www.jimellissaabparts.com/produc ... 86622.html
http://www.jimellissaabparts.com/produc ... 93156.html

It's the same part number listed on the Skandix catalogue. Jimellis website shows the fitment of these parts on 1986-93 900 and 1985-98 9000. In addition, Thesaabsite shows the Clutch Master Rebuild kit being the same part number for all model year Saab 99's, 900's, and 9000's.

Is this correct?

Additionally, Is there a good resource or file or website etc. for finding part numbers for 99's?

Sorry for the long post.

Sounds like tje master cyl failed....more common tjan the slave failing...could be a bad connection or line too. Top off the resevoir and see if the pedal pumps up. You could also bleed the clutch again...might give you enough time to shoft gears
I am the 73%

Hi Kuponut

I'm sure that Nutcase will chime in soon but the 'sticky' posts here are a good place to start.

Fluid loss on the ground under the slave points to slave failure. MC rarely leaks when it fails. anything between the two might be the hydraulic line.

The clutch slave seal kit will be different to the 900 one. Later 99s have the same slave but a 74 will have the one you have pictured from Scandix.

The slave you should be able to get cheaper elsewhere. The master is very hard to find - but that Scandix price is very expensive! It would probably be cheaper, if it needs to be done, to get a hydraulic specialist to bore and sleeve the original one and then use a standard rebuild kit.

You should be able to at least knock the box out of gear without the clutch working I'd have thought.
