Got the base frame back from the welder today and began to mock up the actual air dam front panels and the framework to secure it all.

Looks really good Jason. Maybe you can make another one for the red notch back.
In your SPARE TIME of course !

I have a feeling we are both going to me hammering it @ Pagoda next weekend?
Are we going to pit together again?

Yep. We should have a ton of fan support this year. Although I may be holding back a little. I changed the shocks, and finally put in the box with the Quaife. It will be like driving a different car. The only seat time with the new setup has been a gas and coffee run. I should take it easy until I feel it out.

Maybe this one could end up on the notchback eventually. I designed it to bolt on to the stock bumper mounts, and it screws into the fenders at the plastic inserts that held the rails for the bumper extensions. It will bolt easily onto any c900.

If I know you, you'll hold back a few runs and then you'll have to go for the FAST run. We should have a good time. 5 cars in the class. If we forget the Mazda SPEED we should all be in contention.

Got some more mock up done on the air dam this weekend. The framework is almost figured out.

Nut-N- Bolted the motor too. Checked nearly every fastener on the forward half of the car.

Flushed out the cooling system and refilled with water + water wetter.

Everything seems good to go for Pagoda this coming weekend.

So what's the point of an airdam like that? Wouldn't the additional wind resistance just slow you down?

The point of an air dam is to manage the air. It is meant to direct the air around the car or channel it into the intakes etc. Airflow under the car has a lot of wind resistance since the bottom is not smooth. It can also cause lift. The center section directs it into the radiator, and off to each side the air flows around the sides of the car. The splitter adds a small amount of downforce at speed too. I plan to add a pair of scoops on either side to direct some air onto the brakes.

It is probably a bit of overkill, Aerodynamics don't really work at lower speeds. But I took off the original turbo fascia, and wanted to create something to put in its place. If all else fails, at least it will look badass!

I think the bigger factor I should be worrying about is the weight. The front airdam assembly is not exactly light. Eventually I would like to take what I learn from this and develop a lightweight front assembly from fiberglass. I already have a fiberglass bumper skin that looks very similar to the stock flatnose unit, but with a shorter overhang. If I incorporate the grille, headlight bezels, turn signals, and lower air dam into it, it will reduce weight tremendously. The one shown is only 5.5 lbs

Front bumper without the airdam parts is 26 lbs. With the airdam 34 lbs.

Looking forward to the airdam review. You should do a couple of runs with the airdam and a couple without it so you can do an apples to apples comparison.

Got the airdam pretty much finished last night. I am going to add a few things to it later, like a pair of brake ducts, and maybe open up the grille area better.

I took it out for a ride on the street last night. It scrapes a little at intersections, and entering and leaving parking lots, but for the most part seems like it should be ok for a smooth roadway course. I may just have to put it on at the track, and take it off to transit home.

The splitter flexes a fair amount, but the actual framework is surprisingly rigid. In fact I can almost stand on the splitter. Everything is pop riveted together with exception of the welded angle rivet flange. I used countersunk screws, and locknuts to attach the splitter. I have a reasonable belief that the splitter is going to be somewhat sacrificial. So it can be replaced without much trouble.

Trial by fire this weekend!

Looks badass. I have seen folks put a layer of plywood under the splitter for the wear surface. Cheaper and lighter than the uhmw plastic. If you go that route make sure you use some for outdoor use due to potential rain. It will look like a deck of cards if the water looses up the glue.
Some titanium rub blocks would be spectacular in the corners.
Good luck this weekend.

Run magnesium rub blocks like the old DTm cars.

There is actually a product called Jabrock. It is a plywood product that is meant to be used as a sacrificial skid material.

I bought a whole 4x8 sheet of the HDPE that I used for the splitter. The .070 sheet plastic is the same stuff.

That looks sweet! Would SPG panels be too heavy/wierd looking? I think they might complete the look.
