Powder coating setup

Postby Crazyswede » Thu Jul 29, 2010 6:09 pm

Instead of paying someone to powder coat my parts I have decided to just buy a kit and an oven and do it myself. I am thinking of getting one of the Hot Coat kits from eastwood...unless anyone has a better suggestion....Jordan..... :dunno:

I have a harbor freight kit and bought powders from caswell plating.. the gun works ok.... It seems to go through lots of powder so make sure you do lots of things at the same time, but its cheap. The finish is probably not as durable as one done professionally, but I'm not sure. It's probably just because they prep the things better than I do which is pretty crucial for good adhesion.

You're welcome to come and use/borrow my oven...

I have the same gun as jordan and you know what my oven looks like... I find that pre-heating the metal makes all the difference. The cheaper guns don't really charge the particles all that well so you end up with a lot of powder not hitting the object.
As with any kind of painting, prep is the key and you need to have nice clean metal to coat. Beadblasting off any rust is essential.
What kind of things are you thinking of coating? Its a nice setup to have especially for doing special finishes like matts, wrinkles, textures etc, but for just coating small stuff like brackets and even a-arm I'd use a good urethane either brushed on with a foam brush or thinned and sprayed out a preval sprayer. The eastwood "Ceramic black 2K" is good stuff.

I have some exhaust and intake manifolds to do, a bunch of brackets, brake pedal assembly, clutch pedal assembly for the rover, etc. I was just going to sand blast the pieces and coat them. If I have a powder coater handy I will be a lot more likely to do other stuff. I have already found several cheap old electric ranges...some are actually nicer then the one in my apartment.

Don't most electric oven/ranges run on 220v? Do you have the capability to run that in the garage or are you just going to stink up the apartment?

not going to do it at the apartment....going to be down at Charlies place. Should have no issue with the 220v plug.
