I emailed him about a kevlar composite hood/trunk lid. I'm more interested in the hood, but in case anybody else was interested , I thought I'd ask.

I know Luke said he was also interested if the price was right , so we might get a good sized order.

Get me a price on a 99 hood, preferrably a kevlar or fiberglass version. I would also like to know what the same material would be for the 99 notchback trunk lid. Im very particular about the finish quality on these. I want this 99 to look good.

Im interested in info on a hood for a 900. My 84 notchback hillclimb car could use some weight reduction. Fiberglass would work on this. I was on the site looking at the hood, headlight covers, and grille. Id like to have a notchback trunklid for my 84 too, but doesnt look like they make one. Low cost is key. This is a race only vehicle, so Im not AS particular with the quality level, but dont want to end up with garbage. It still has to look presentable. Im kinda torn on the fenders and quarter panels as the flares dont really speak to me.

Someone with some dough should invest in a batch and be a us distributor for this guys stuff.

Does anyone have any idea what freight around the continental US would be on single hoods? Seems like a pretty big crate to me.

I got an email back from Erik, nothing with pricing yet, but it sounds like he will customize the part for your particular interest.. ie. cost, strength, looks. (Of course everyone one wants all three). The mold is from an original part and say the fit is very good. I told him I'm basically looking for a lightweight replacement I will paint to look stock and be fastened w/ hood pins. Kevlar/Fiberglass is fine if it will keep the costs down. He said he'll be on holiday for a week if I don't hear back in the next day or so...just wait longer.

A single unit would probably be expensive, but a couple of things stacked don't take up much more room than a one on its own and splitting the cost could make it worthwhile to get them made overseas.

I'm interested in a ligher(er) 900 hood for short cash.

Fiberglass/Kevlar to paint and hoodpin.

I will weight my gutted hood...anyone know the weight of a stock 900 hood for comparison?

It would suck to spend $100's for 10lb reduction.

I know I can lift off a 99 or 900 hood by myself and its not a struggle other than its ungainly. That said I'd guess they weigh between 30 and 40 lbs. The Kevlar hood that Luke made feels less than 10 lbs.

Some c900 part weights (weighed on a postal scale, so within a couple pounds):
  • Sunroof (excluding motor): 39 pounds
  • Hood: 59 pounds
  • Rear hatch (including glass): 64
  • Early rear bumper: 22
  • Later rear bumper: 15 (presumably, front bumpers are similar)

Add me to the somewhat interested list, but I can't decide between 99 or 900. Let's say 900.

Hans, does the hood weight you list include the hinge mechanism?

I weighed a 99 hood (a '74) at just over 60 lbs, wondering if they werent a little thicker gauge steel than the 900, they seem just as heavy and are of course slightly smaller.

The kevlar hood I made weighs 12 lbs with paint and hood pins.

I don't care if it's local (Luke's hood is SWEET!) or from overseas, I still want a kevlar hood and trunk lid for my 99(s).
If it turns into a group buy, I might buy 2 hoods...
Can that be right? 1000SEK = $145???

I don't think it will be Kevlar at $145. I pretty sure the you could not buy the raw Kevlar cloth material for one hood with $145. I think the stuff coming from se is glass chop fiber, open mold, untrimmed parts. I could be wrong.

I think the plastic stuff is that cheap, the kevlar I haven't gotten a price quote back yet (he is on vacation until the end of the week), but I'm sure won't be as cheap, and it sounded like he'll do as much finish work as you'd like.

Has there been any progress in figuring out how much this will cost?
