Based on some photographs of the works engines, we were able re-create the piece. Dave Kennedy at Lesco did the machine work, as he's done some similar flywheels before and was happy to get involved with the project.
It turned out great and save about 6.5 lbs over stock.

I'm sure its more than 6.5 lbs lighter, which is just on 3kg, when i hade mine lightened by just machining the outer part it was a saving of 2kg. Can you put the flywheel on some accurate scales so we all know for sure what it weighs?

I weighed it on a postal scale and it was right around 14 lbs. I didnt weigh a stock one but from what I recall they were about 20.5 or so?

Yes the standard flywheel is 9.2 kg (circa 20.5 lbs) 14 lbs is 6.3 kg, the extra machining is worth another kilo, i thought it would have been more, but 6.3 is not to be sniffed at!
A TTV steel billet flywheel is 6kg and the aluminium type from Swedish Dynamics is 4.5kg.

seems like it should be lighter then that. The flywheels I have had done come in around 15 lbs and thats just cutting down the material by the ring

I also though it would be lighter, a flywheel i had lightened by Puma Race Engines came in at 7.2kg (circa 16 lbs).

The MSS lightened flywheels have material removed off the back, some of it closer to the center of flywheel. Those weigh in around 15lb. Its hard to tell by the pictures but the MSS ones might be cut deeper than the cuts on your flywheel?

If you really wanted to put it on a diet you could have had some big holes cut through it. BUT... that's not what the museum photos show.

You should have it cadmium plated!

Hi guys

Check this flywheel from the Swedish "folkraceshop.se"
It weighs in at only 4,9 kg.
But they say that its not for turbo cars...

That's awesome! I wonder if they crack easily. I've had a few lightened flywheels develop small cracks.

1000 sek is a pretty good price. But kind of expensive for a folkracer.

I had dave do my 9-5 flywheel as well, and he said he was working on mine and luke's at the same time. He took off about 5 pounds, which is just about the same as abbott's aluminum offering. He balanced the pressure plate with the flywheel for me too which was awesome. I'll have to take a few pictures when I have some time.

Luke - Is that my bottom end that you're building there, or did you find one that had not been run with gravel inside of it?
There is no such thing as too low or too stiff.

Luke, thanks for bringing the motor to Parsippany NJ for the 2011 Saab Owners Convention and taking the time to tell us about what you have done. Great job and great effort. Good luck with the completion.

Bet that engine drew more interest than some of the cars!

Thanks for linking your pictures Jon. I've been looking for pictures for a half hour and was just thinking, "I bet Jon Williams has some...". I wish I could have been there! There appears to have been some neat cars. It looks like the parts tent had some real parts in it this year vs. the typical piles of knick kancks.

If I had never met Luke or Jordan, never seen this website, and had actually been to the SOC I think I would have shit myself seeing Jordan and Luke's cars and that crazy 16v B engine sitting in that parking lot.
