Moving on...

The only oil leak I seem to have is around the oil pump. Seemed to be from underneath. I had replaced the pump seal, but when I switched to the turbo housing with the cooler sandwich plate I never did any of those seals. So I pulled the cotter pin and the top and spring shot out (into the yard no doubt).

So I'm guessing this is just a severely worn o-ring (hard as a rock)?

I'll look for something locally , but wondering if anybody had the size written down somewhere.

Also, just making sure I didn't lose any other pieces.. I see there is a piece under the spring (I think that's the actual pressure relief valve), but besides the spring there is nothing else there , right?

I've replace O-rings in the oil pump before but they were large 57mm O-rings that sealed between the pump cover and the body. You'll probably want to replace those too.

http://www.mcmaster.com/#9262k309/=cuzgy9

That smaller one (yes, it looks like an old expired up O-ring) you can spec out yourself. Measure the inner diameter of the groove that it sits on and the inner diameter of the bore that it goes into. You want something that will be squished ~25% +/- 15% to work properly.

After you have your measurements, look up what McMaster sells for standard Buna-N O-rings in a size that would have some interference and enter your measurements and the O-ring size here:
http://www.applerubber.com/oring-gland-calculator/
Check to make sure all the items in the "results" section are within specification (they'll highlight red if they're not).

Thanks for the link. Ok so if my measurements are correct I need a 17(ID)x2.5mm o-ring. SAE sizes didn't calculate out properly...at least common sizes. If I have to order them I might as well get the Viton® Fluoroelastomer ones :P

edit:actually those are cheaper since you don't have to buy 100 of them..

I'll see if the hardware stores carry metric o-rings, but I doubt it.

Oh, Geoff, you mention pump o-rings... plural.. I only remember replacing one?

There may have only been one but my recollection was that there was one under a cover housing and then another on the other side, but I may be confused. It was 5 years ago.

If you have to order more than 1 o-ring from mcmaster I'll give you fair value for one, thats the only 0-ring I didnt replace on my oil pump assembly.

I was actually going ask if you needed one... should be coming today. They come in packs of 10 so that'll be 74 cents. I take paypal or cashiers check.

Just something of interest I noticed.

I pulled out another one of the caps on an earlier block ('73 I think) and it is slightly different and so is the housing. The internal spring and plunger are different too.

The groove is smaller also the 2.5mm o-rings I got may not work...just FYI

So I got my Bilsteins back (finally, It only took a month). I opened the box, but I there is no info about what they did besides "reshaft and custom valving" . They gave them new part number stickers that just say "custom valving" as well, but no dyno sheets or anything.

I'm going to fit them tomorrow and maybe give them a call to see if they remember what they did to them

I've seen some before that have the valve rate printed on a sticker and put on them ("300/100") and others that I've had to write "rally valve" (whatever that means) on them to keep track of what is what. As you know, it would be nice to have some kind of record so you can either duplicate in the future or know what direction you think you want to go if you're making a change.

So did a couple more things in prep for Okemo II

Reset the valve clearances (most were OK) and checked the lifters
Installed the new Bilsteins (They are much improved!)
Stole Drew's idea and Installed c900 8k tach.

I soldered in a pigtail with a weatherpack connector . If I want to use the old tach I have an adapter back to spade terminals.

Viola! I used a spare cluster (has cooler light icons)

I hooked it up and it works just fine. I was hoping to either get a shift light signal from my wideband or hook up a simple circuit, but I'll just wait until I have the 30 bucks to use a real one and hook it up where the stock clock hole is, under the readout. I didn't mess with the center tach idea, but It is always an option later on.

Hi aero84

Hi

I have thought of doing this however the one thing that has held me back is how you would connect up the speedo cable to the relocated speedo given there is a hole in the firewall for this purpose.

Did you drill another hole in the firewall or were you able to persuade the cable to bend to the new speedo location?

Thanks
Neil
