Also brown ;)
At least, I've seen 2 that were and seemed original (one on here, one in person)

...was available in red, silver, gray, and black; the 2-door was available in metallic green.
The Turbo S was a special model with factory-mounted water injection, giving an extra 15–20 PS.
In 1978 there was a very limited edition of a little over 100 five-door 99 Turbos. They were only available in cardinal red metallic.

Didn't know about the Turbo-S, very cool.
I wonder how difficult it is to install a 900 Turbo onto a 99 .. can't be too many turbo-converted coupes about.

Brown was not an original color for the 78 99 turbo in the US, if someone has one its either a repaint or a conversion from a GL. The wikipedia info must be for the Uk market, as we never 2 doors or green turbos here :(

Putting the turbo from a later C900 onto a 99 is not hard at all, it bolts right up to a B or H 8V manifold, you have to clock the compressor housing a little and build a custom downpipe, but thats basically it unless its a water cooler one, then those lines need to be plumbed in.

Yup, all we got were 3 door 99 turbos (with the exception of those few 2dr '77 test cars).

Do you still have to use that wonky style waste gate, or do you use the normal wastgate with a later style turbo?

If you want, you can fit a later turbo with a "normal" waste gate. You can either block off the extra fitting on the exhaust manifold (leading to the "wonky style" waste gate) or use an 8v turbo "H" engine exhaust manifold - which seem to be less prone to cracking.

Off topic, but my friend has a '78 Buick LeSabre Turbo Sport Coupe and it came from the factory (in '78) with a "normal" waste gate. I wonder why SAAB used the "wonky style" (hehe) waste gate?

edit: I forgot to mention that the 99T had a 4-bolt turbo outlet (and 4-bolt downpipe flange to match). You'd have to convert your downpipe to a 3 bolt flange by cutting off the 4 bolt flange and fitting one of those replaceable style flanges. I've seen some 99s that have 3 bolt flanges that were converted to fit replacement turbos. I think B turbo 900s had a 4 bolt flange in '79 and a 3 bolt flange in '80 and I think the turbo outlet on the B motor 900s was similar to the 99 in that it points at a different angle than later 900s.

I've done most of the mentioned turbo mods to my 78 FrankenSAAB at one point or another.
First was an 80 BSI20 from a 900 into my 78 L with the original wastegate. Back then I was still able to get a NOS 99 downpipe. The pipe had the 4-bolt flange while the Turbo used the three. I trimmed off the flange at the cat, slid the 4-bolt off and slid a 3-bolt on. Then just welded a 2.5 inch exhaust out the back.
Later, I installed the Turbo from an 86 9000 using a B201 manifold using the exhaust elbow from the 9000 and custom fabbing the rest.

What is the blue coating on the manifold, turbo, and downpipe? What is its life expectancy given all the heat it will realize?
