93F Rally ride

OK here we go!

I've always wanted a vintage race car so thats where this 93f is headed...

The rules

1. No drilling
2. No cutting
3. No alterations that can't be reversed (painting on the already repainted body ok!)
4. Nothing done to the car can make it inoperable for more than 72 hours

I've always hated the idea of chopping up nice cars with mods, and these days i'm feeling more like driving than restoring. The saab has enough dings and dents that I don't feel bad about using it... lots!

Things i'd like to do to the saab off the top of my head include: Bucket seats, some gauges, skid plate, interior, fog lights, track down some parts that have gone missing etc... Long term i'd like to wrangle another engine with some more HP but for now the 850 is just peachy.

The name of the game is fun, how I would have modded my saab if I had been around in the 60's :yay:

I think this sounds like a great project. I have a '72 96 and a '64 96 that I'm taking the same approach with. These cars were meant to be driven and enjoyed.

Is this car a 4-speed or a 3-speed?

Neat. I can take some photos of Bruce Turk's Puttyus Maximus in a few weeks

You obviously won't do the roof spotlight (no drilling) but there are many other period-correct things on that car. The bucket seat was a SAAB Sport & Rally seat, Bruce only knows of two of them, at least in the US and they're uncomfortable so you may want to look into reproduction vintage seats.

There was a skidplate offered by SAAB that you could try to duplicate.

Eric Carlsson used a time piece from a Soviet MiG. It's awesome.

The Halda rally odo stuff gets pricy but was offered from the SAAB S&R catalog back in the day.

There was a S&R expansion chamber for the two strokes that gave extra power. Somewhere on the internets I found drawings for one once. The car above has it and a straight pipe, it's loud!

You could get disk brakes from a later 96 for the front so you can actually stop.

They handle real nice with some stiff springs and good shocks.

RING-A-DING-DING!!!

I though wire mesh headlight covers would be cool, along with a hood strap, and i'd heard about Carlsson's mig clock... and then I ran into Turk's article and realized he beat me to it :bawl:

I was looking into a repop aluminium bomber type seat i've seen at some car shows in hot rods but I would want to upholster it... i've got a boney rump...lol!

Does anyone have a picture of that saab skid plate?

@Saabfan9 The front is the part of the car that has the fewest dings, it got rear ended at some point that caused some minor damage back there. Its got alot of little dents down the sides, this car saw alot of use!

@V4_guy Its a 3 speed... that freewheel takes some getting used to, shifting without the clutch is neat.

Bruce's car has EVERYTHING, so just do what you want and don't worry about what someone else has.

His car has a longnose skidplate on it with a custom front bracket. It sticks out but it isn't mounted in those pictures above. V4 Guy sent me a link a few months back about a guy who built his own longnose skidplate, he'll probably post a link. The bullnose skidplates would be shorter.

As for a bony rump... Bruce puts some couch pillows on his seat.

Ok so a small amount of progress...

Since i'm going to repaint the car in a few years anyway I thought i'd try my hand at adding some "spots" for numbers. The paint on this car is so bad the masking tape pulls it off when you remove it... frustrating but nothing horrible.

It's a good thing the car isn't red or it would look like a lady bug.

Maybe it's a pirate car

That car is so classic,... I wouldn't change too much about it.
