Re: G-stock or DSP build

Postby SwedeSport » Sat Dec 15, 2012 3:57 pm

Just for comparison sake,

My SMF 86 900 8 valve NA car ran 148.862 (seconds) at the Duryea Hillclimb, while the DSP class winner ran 146.449 in a 92 BMW 325i.

I would like to see my notchback race car put me in the 2 minute club.

I got my tires yesterday. I'm waiting for my spacers so I can mount them on the car. But here is a photo of a test fit.

As I suspected a 3/4" spacer is needed to clear the springs on the front and the trailing link on the rear.

Rims look great. Love the louvered fogs too!

Ok I'm trying to sort out the tachometer. There are three plugs the wires are colored brown yellow and green I think where do they go?

Made some good progress today,

I got the tach working and found I was way lean on my mixture settings.

I'm wondering if the 900 turbo has a different ramp rate on the airflow plate?

I managed to disassemble the front hubs today. The disks will go to be turned the hubs will go to be fitted with the extended studs. Finally I will try a Toyota hilux 4pot to see if it will work for the disk diameter

Saturday I disassembled the suspension. While I was at it I decided on a ride height. Now all I have to do is buy springs and get the shocks revalved to match.

I apologise for the big photos my phone doesn't understand 640x480

Ok now that the running issue is diagnosed its time to think about springs. Since this is not a daily driver I'm looking at going a lot stiffer than stock. I'm thinking about using 550# springs in the front and 500# in the rear. I've built lots of different race cars and I try to use what works for others as a bassis for my builds. I have Bilstein shocks already so damping higher rates is not too much of an issue.

I can't find my list of 99/900 spring rates right now but you'll want stiffer in the rear than in the front due to the suspension geometry. I seem to remember the set I'm running on my street 99 are somewhere around 350lb front and 650lb rear. If I can find the list I'll post some more definite answers.

Does having a giant rear swaybar make any difference?

Typically you want more rear bar than front, sometimes you don't want any front bar.

99Super has a pretty good autocross and hill climb setup on FrankenSAAB. Maybe he'll share some secrets :P

Good news the running issue is resolved. The previous owner was an idiot jumping to the conclusion that the computer must be bad when he hadn't gone through the full diagnostic steps. The problem was a tired relay. The contacts were burned up and as a result no power was reaching the computer or frequency valve. A new relay installed and I now have a Swedish watch.

o_O

I've never seen a CIS computer go bad. I worked at a European (mainly SAAB) shop in the late 90's and we got a low-mileage '80 or '81 Porsche 924 Turbo in the show that wouldn't run right. It had CIS and the Audi motor. It ran just like a car with bad timing. My boss wouldn't let me check the timing and insisted that it was the computer. He took it out, sent it to NAPA (yeah.... where?) and they lost it. I saw the owner of the car a year or so later and he told me it was still at the shop and he was thinking about writing it off.
