78 Turbo Refresh

Postby Chouan » Tue May 07, 2013 9:32 pm

This car is formally DSP99T's Autocross build. My plans are very different for it...

I have always wanted a classic, tastefully upgraded/backdated, daily driver. I am also a Saab addict with a 900 SPG, 9000 Aero and CSE and Sonett III under my belt. The 99 Combi is my personal "perfect" Saab. The rear end it has the most iconic Saab shape, while the front end has the vintage Sixten Sason flair. The dash is less ergonomic then the 900, but for me is cooler. The sunroof is wonderfully tactile in operation. I could go on, I like this car a lot... but there is a lot I would change, and will! This will not be a purist car, and I am taking inspiration from the Porsche Outlaw folks. Take a classic and make it yours. I want it to be custom yet look OEM, like a special that was never made.

Here is a list of modifications I am planning:

Drivetrain
16V swap with T5
Looking for a good motor. Have Trionic from a 94 9k.

Charge cooler intake plenum
Similar to the setup on the 99t factory rally car.

4 speed with #7 primaries, Steel diff cover, oil cooler
Have 4 speed in the car and a re-bulit on the bench. Looking for primary gears... Anyone?

Short throw shifter
Have it.

Exhaust
Car came with New non-turbo center pipe, muffler and rear pipe. Which is for sale!!

Stainless, 2.5", looking for suggestions ???
Thinking about a single 1 in 2 out muffler.

Suspension and Steering
* Electric power steering column
I think the Vauxhall Corsa setup popular in the UK has been discussed here before

Boxed A Arms

88 Axel and 9000 brakes
Have these parts on the shelf. Center relocate on rear

Sway Bar(s)
Considering the Aftermarket rear bar + stock 900 bar and a front bar. Thoughts?

15" or 16" x 7" wheel set
Thinking mesh 3-piece or widened Incas (new axels/4x108 pattern make this a challenge, any ideas?)

Lowered (adjustable?) springs
The 900 springs on there sit too high.

Exterior
Chrome Bumpers
Early style front and custom/modified rear bumper to accommodate hatch.

Chrome Mirrors
These are the flag style sjones found, chrome but painted black. I have one so far

Fiberglass hood
Have the hood, but it needs work and I want it to tilt.

And more  This is a long term project and I will update above as I do/develop ideas further. The idea is to build and sort out, then strip for a repaint and re-assemble.

Next posts will be about delivery from NC, teardown and inspection, sorting out the original engine.

Please feel free to comment/criticize/advise on any of the above.
Thanks!

Looks an interesting project. Why no B engine though? That's the heart of a 99T in my humble opinion :)

I always like the OEM look though :)

I am all for doing your own thing with your car, but real 99Ts are getting kinda scarce.

A nice clean example should be preserved.

I tend to just modify the less desirable bastard children, like 89t sedans... and 86 base model 8 valve cars.

I love my 3-piece rims and chrome mirrors. And I suggest "Saab turbo" side stripes! Post more pics!!

I dig it. Make it yours man. Very curious about the electric power steering assist!

Radioflyer-
The finish on that 900 is awesome. Dig the rims too. I am going to forego Turbo stripes. With the badges on the car there is already 4 places that say turbo. I may do the simple "Saab" solid stripe stripe, as often seen on sonetts.

Swedesport-
I agonized on this for a while. I don't have any guilt. Here is why... the motor has already been messed with (trying to sort it out now, see future posts), there is a prestine cardinal red 99t in a museum, I can't control what anyone else does with this car so I might as well enjoy it my way. Again I want to be tasteful with it.

Nutcase-
B motors are cool, but H motors are cooler. That's my personal opinion. Factually the later engine is lighter and has more tuning options.

At the end of the day it is still YOUR car.

Feel free to do what you want with it.

It's YOUR dog!

That car might look good with gold 8-spoke Minilite/Shelby type wheels

You could possibly do the Incas or other 4x114 wheels by running adapters.

Unless you're putting super wide super sticky tires on and running tons of power with a limited slip diff, or if you're putting in a steering quickener, I'd stay away from the power steering. The car will feel tough to steer when it's not moving under it's own power (or going less than a few mph) but won't be too tough to steer otherwise. The manual rack gives better road feel too. I'd stay away from doing that until you've had time to drive it a bit.

It will be interesting to see how the chrome bumpers look on a combi coupe!
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:

Oh I won't complain if you stick a boring engine in ;)

Mine will always be a B and always have the original wastegate.

And most of the time be ~175bhp

I love my little B engine. She's getting an Omni-cool intercooler pretty soon.

You need a nice SS header for that car.

If you ask Jon Williams nicely and hand him the proper sized check I bet he would make you one.

I need that valve cover for my 99. Humm... I wonder if someone local has one that I can get coated. One of my friends just bought a 2 pack 99 deal. Something about a guy taking them as collateral for a loan that knew nothing about Saabs haha.
