1978 Saab 99t

Postby Saabguy70 » Thu May 16, 2013 7:00 pm

Hello,

Just acquired a Clean 1978 Saab 99 turbo and I need to remove the water pump but don't have the tool. I heard of using a slide hammer. But not sure which one or how to go about doing it. Any help would be great. I just don't want break the jack shaft.

I also got clean H manifold and t3 turbo. It's heading in the right direction, I too like many of you here want to keep it stock a possible, thats where the valve is in the end.

lastly will 1984 c900 hubs work on 1987 vented c900 calipers and rotors, with handbrake acting on the front wheels?

Thanks for the help!

Hey,

I assume you mean can you use 87 vented rotors with 84 hubs. You would need the hubs as well. Without a spacer, you can't just use the discs and calipers.

Your car should have a 12 cog water pump. You can't use a slide hammer on it, you'll break things.

Are you planning to replace the turbo with the later manifold, turbo, and wastegate?

I have access to 84 hubs and would get rebuilt 87 vented calipers and rotors.
I would be addin the later style T3 turbo to the H manifold. The original turbo is shot.

Thanks.

The 84 hubs won't work the vented rotors. You need the 86T-87T/S specific hubs.

The later turbo can be used and the manifold bolts right on... the biggest issue is the downpipe, the battery needs to be moved and the downpipe custom made, but I've seen that done before.

DO NOT USE A SLIDE HAMMER! :)

Do you think you need vented discs? Parts are much harder to find and I've never had any overheating issues.

I know it is taboo, but I have successfully used a slide hammer on the 12 cog water pumps. I am not recommending it, but in an emergency delicate taps with the hammer has done the job for me.

Now that the cars are antique, it's probably best not to risk it. Perhaps you could borrow one, or I seem to recall a thread somewhere that described making one.

Good luck, I'd love to see a picture.

I would be willing to loan the tool out (and ship), for a substantial deposit.
Less brake more gas!
