Yep, that's basically a bare minimum rally cage these days, actually more or less identical to the cages in my cars only set a little further back for mongo. About 120 feet of tubing!

We still have to put the auxillary A pillar bars in.

I was just going to ask about how much those intrude around the steering wheel. Although you said the steering wheel will be extended back some, that will probably help a ton.

Cage and car look sweet! Cool to see this moving along at such a fast pace, didn't realize you were going to have it ready so soon when you told me about the car.

I used the maximum allowed bend in the a pillar bars in my car, they don't feel close to the steering wheel at all and I have no issue getting in/out.

The weekend ended with the cage 100% complete, we also finished the seat mounts and figured out how the new steering column will mount.

Yeah I think we have the market cornered on soccerball wheels right now so we might see if we can pt together a CNC program to get a couple of sets lightened.

I arrived home from PA at 4 am and had no issues on the way back. The van was pretty happy towing between 60 and 65 mph and I'd guess I was getting between 16 and 18 mpg. I have a small exhaust leak before the turbo which I believe is cutting into my mileage as I used to get 25 to 28 mpg empty and was hoping to see 18 to 20 towing. Lots of stuff to do to the van and to the car in the next 3 weeks.

Tonight Matt Weir and I removed the old calipers and brake lines from the car. We also cut out a template for a new dash panel and swapped out one of the wheels to one with a tire capable of holding air.

Time lapse of Josh and myself fabricating the cage and seat mounts. We didnt have the gopro the first day so we missed the hardest part which is the main hoop and especially the side legs. I mostly cut and notched tube while Josh welded. 120 feet of tubing and 6 lbs of welding wire later there was a cage.

Its only on Facebook at the moment:

The cage install video was a camera shot every 30 seconds over a 4 day period. The removal video was a camera trigger every 10 seconds over a 2 day time...we had more coverage but accidentally deleted some of the files. We also stitched the removal film together at 30 frames/second so it goes a bit faster.

Last night Jon Williams and I worked on the car for about 4 hours and got a fair amount done. While I removed paint, bondo, undercoating, and some rust from the drivers rear wheel well Jon dropped the bottom half of the front suspension off the car. We noticed that although the A arms are boxed top and bottom they had no real reinforcement on the shock pins. Jon set to work and nicely Tig welded gussets on both arm forming a very strong reinforcement.

Tonight the plan is to pull the headers out of the car, clean them up, and get a spray of high temp paint on them so they look a bit nicer and offer a little corrosion protection. Also hope to finish the passenger rear wheel well, pull the old shifter out and the rear brake lever assembly, drain the transmission fluid and pull the diff cover for an inspection.
