HEJ JESPER,

EXCELLENT VIDEO FOOTAGE....

I WAS AT A 'HILLCLIMB' HERE IN THE UK A FEW WEEKS AGO,AND MET UP WITH AN OLD FRIEND.....
HE IS OVER 70 YEARS OLD NOW,AND BOUGHT HIS SAAB 99 BRAND NEW,BACK IN 1968.....

HE IS A REGULAR MARSHAL ON MOTORSPORT EVENTS....

NO ENGINE MODIFICATION'S(APART FROM 1850 ENGINE,SAAB REPLACED THE 1709CC UNDER WARRANTY).....

THE CAR RARELY COMES OUT OF THE GARAGE NOW,BUT IT WAS THE FIRST SAAB 99 TO COME TO THE UK.....AND IS STILL IN REMARKABLE CONDITION,IT REMINDED VERY MUCH OF YOUR CAR......

ARE YOU TAKING THE 99 TO 'MANTORP' FOR THE SAAB INTERNATIONAL...? I THINK THEY HAVE A TRACKDAY MAYBE,ON SATURDAY.....

Nice 99! Unfortunately not, I'm currently on vacation and not back before early next week. Need to assemble the right hand side rear wheel bearing, then it should be ready to drive again.

Worned out two rear wheel bearings in roughly 3000km, which is not very good. Will install the new ones using wheel bearing grease (used mos2 moly last time, probably didn't withstand the heat).

Autumn is coming, so I need to drive it some more while I can.

Conical rollers

Pretty worned out.

2000 miles for our usa minded. Do you know what the root cause of this happening? You should get 200k miles out of a roller bearing.
You mention heat. From itself or is it close to a source like the exhaust or brakes dragging?

Car-season is over, and the winter updates can begin. The plan is to run less stance next year and instead focus more on motorsport look without stretched tires. The plans include larger wheel-arches and 17" wheels with ~235/40 tire size.

Parts from felgenfuchs.de, 1.25" outers for the rear wheels.

Without flares, reveals the small overall diameter of the current wheels.

Thanks for posting. I saw your mod on the Turbo Sweden forum. Was going to send 99Super the link as he was looking for a fix on his larger tires.

Sorry, I'll try to be better on updating this forum too :)

I think (or hope) that the overall look of the car will remain good, altough we're talking more narrow wheels (7.5" for the front, 8.25" for the rears).

Aim is to run similar rideheight on the suspension, and the overall wheel diameter will be ~40mm larger.

Has anyone thought of roll center adaptors for 99/900? Some kind of spacer between the lower linkarm and the ball joint? My front roll center is currently somewhere below ground.

HEJ,HEJ......A FEW QUESTION'S,EARLY MORNING IF I MAY ?

LOOKING GOOD THERE WITH THE MODIFICATIONS,TO THE ARCHES....

I HAVE GOT TO DO THIS ALSO,ON THE 'PIKES PEAK PROJECT,99 TURBO' FOR TYRE CLEARANCE....SO LOOKING AT YOUR PHOTO'S,THAT IS REALLY :-O QUITE SOME STEEL COMING OUT THERE.....

JUST GOT HOLD OF SOME 'SPORT&RALLY' ARCHES,AS WELL.....BUT THESE WILL, BE USED TO ENCAPSULATE,(TWO PIECE)THE LARGER 'ARTEC' GLASS FIBRE WING'S,TO STOP THEM FILLING UP WITH ROAD DIRT,STONES,DUST ETC......

REGARD'S THE BOOT SPOILER,IS THAT A 'SPORT&RALLY' PART FOR THE SALOON...?

I JUST GOT ONE 'NEW OLD STOCK' HERE,FOR THE COMBI-COUPE,AND THE CURVE IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT,ON THE UNDERSIDE,TO FIT A SALOON...?

I AM INTRIGUED THOUGH READING THE ARTICLE IN THE MAGAZINE ?

IT MENTIONS DRIVESHAFT FAILURE IN PRETTY QUICK SUCCESSION ?

WAS IT THE SHAFT ITSELF FAILING,THE TRIPOD BEARINGS,OR THE C.V JOINT...AND WERE YOU ON FULL LOCK,OR WHEELS STRAIGHT AHEAD,WHEN THEY FAILED....?

MED VÄNLIGA HÄLSNINGAR

BY 'ROLL CENTER',DO YOU MEAN 'KING PIN INCLINATION' I THINK WE CALL IT HERE....OR ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE STEERING SELF CORRECTION?

I ASK,DUE TO SEEING SOME WISHBONE'S,AT SAAB MEETING (FOR THE 96,BUT ESSENTIALLY SIMILAR DESIGN) AND THEY HAD ADDITIONAL PLATES WELDED ON,TO INCREASE THE CAMBER CONSIDERABLY.....?

AT FIRST,I WAS QUITE INTERESTED IN THEM,BUT DECIDED THEY WERE MORE FOR A 'RAT LOOK' TYPE STANCE,THAN OF ANY ACTUAL BENEFIT TO THE ROADHOLDING,AS 1 DEGREE CAMBER,OR MORE CAN BE ACHIEVED SIMPLY WITH ADDITION OF EXTRA SHIMS......

STEERING SELF CORRECTION,CAN BE ALTERED WITH CASTER/CASTOR....

Nice! Where have you found the artec flares? Actually there is still more height in the original wheel arches, so one could cut even more...

The boot spoiler is the cc-part, modified quite a bit to fit the radius of the sedan :P I'm not a fan of the original sedan one.

Yes, the driveshaft failure was back in 2013, when the car was fwd. Due to the low rideheight, and I had mounted the axles from a '87 Saab 90, which turned out to be too short, so the inner tripod fell out twice during one week... So no propshaft/driveshaft failure with the rwd-setup yet :)

Roll center is a theoretical point, which is below ground due to the angles of my front lower linkarms. The idea is to design some kind of spacer to be able to keep the height of the front knuckles and at the same time have less angled control arms.

There are a few things you could do (in theory) to adjust roll center.
There's a good simulator here:
http://www.vsusp.com/

If you get all the dimensions for a 99, make sure to share ;)
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:

OK,NOW I AM WITH YOU,THAT'S A GOOD 'COMPUTER MODEL' THERE GEOFF.... ;)

'ARTEC' ARCHES WERE MOULDED IN FIBREGLASS,AND FITTED BY A COMPANY 'LOCAL' TO MY HOMETOWN DURING THE EIGHTIE'S.....

SOMEBODY REMOVED A SET,FROM AN ORIGINAL 'SHOWCAR' THAT HAD GOT RATHER TIRED,IN IT'S LIFE CYCLE AND THEN STORED THEM IN THE LOFT FOR MANY,MANY YEARS.......

AS USUAL IN 'SAAB' CIRCLES I BOUGHT SOME PART'S FROM HIM,AND HE HAPPENED TO SHOW ME THE ARCHES,MUST BE 10 YEARS AGO.
AT THE TIME,I DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ANY USE FOR THEM...SO THEY WEN'T BACK IN HIS LOFT?

YEAR'S LATER,I THINK HE FINALLY WANTED THE SPACE BACK,SO I GOT GIVEN THEM....AS HE THOUGHT, IF ANYBODY WAS GOING TO FIND A USE FOR THEM ? IT WOULD BE ME... ;)

SO,I HAVE.... :yay:

JESPER,
I PRESUME YOU ARE STILL RUNNING THIS COILOVER SET-UP,ON THE FRONT,WITH JUST THE CONSTANT VELOCITY JOINT, TO HOLD THE FRONT WHEEL BEARING TOGETHER...?

LOOK'S LIKE YOU HAVE PRETTY MUCH RUN OUT OF FRONT SUSPENSION TRAVEL,WITH THE CURRENT WISHBONE SET -UP ?( FIRST PHOTO TAKEN TROLLHATTAN SPORT&RALLY FESTIVAL 2013) AND THE LIMITATIONS OF TRAVEL,WITHIN BODYSHELL APERTURES ,WITH THE POSSIBLITY OF BALL JOINT'S EXCEEDING THEIR SWIVEL POINT...?

IT IS GOING TO TAKE MAJOR SURGERY,TO MOVE THE WISHBONE MOUNTING POINT'S,WITH PLENTY OF FABRICATION &TRIAL/ERROR......?

I DO A LOT OF WORK ON AUDI,AND ROAD TESTING THEM....

THEIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM,AT THE FRONT IS REALLY QUITE SOMETHING...?

IT 'MIMICS' THE 99/900 SET-UP,BUT WITH ALLOY 'INDEPENDENT' CONTROL ARMS,TO FORM EACH 'SIDE' OF THE WISHBONE....

I WAS THINKING OF THE RESTRICTION ,YOU ARE ALSO ENCOUNTERING WITH THE STEERING RACK ARMS...? AUDI HAVE DYNAMIC STEERING,(RACK MOUNTED IN FRONT OF THE WHEELS)WITH VARIABLE ELECTRONIC ADAPTION CONTROL......

IF YOU COULD GRAFT ON,AN ALL ALLOY SUBFRAME FROM AN AUDI,YOU CAN SET THE HEIGHT TO SUIT YOUR REQUIREMENT'S,AND ROLL CENTRE ?

LIMITATIONS OF COURSE, ARE THE SUMP,BUT AUDI AT LEAST, USE THE NORTH-SOUTH ENGINE SET-UP.....AND THE FRONT SUSPENSION APPEARS TO BE THE SAME EITHER FOR THE FWD,OR 4WD MODEL

THEN EVERYTHING IS JUST BOLT-ON......

THESE PICTURE'S ARE FROM AN AUDI A5 2013 MODEL....TO GIVE SOME IDEA'S
