1968 V4 Rally Car
Picked this little gem up this past weekend. The car is called a 1968 but other info seems to indicate it is in fact newer...and I am looking for another VIN on the body to verify.
It came with some parts

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
Probably not older, '68 was the first year for the large windshield and rear window, which your car has.
So are you going to tow it around on the dolly until the weekend?

The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off
Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
On bring-a-trailer someone said something about it being a '72 that the fenders and grills were swapped around on.
Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
If is is a '68 it will have the vin located on the bulkhead. Later cars had the vin located on the window pillar.
Mine is listed as a 68 on the registeration, but is a 69 according to the vin.
A helpful link.

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
yeah...I meant to say its listed as a 68 but its probably newer than that. I have found two VIN tags in the engine bay and both had the same number which indicated 68. I need to find the vin stamp on the body....any idea where that would be?

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
Page 9 of the manual indicates where the Chassis number is located. On the fire wall and stamped on the body on the door vertical in my case. It also indicates where the trans and motor numbers are.

I will look at the manual tomorrow. My motor and trans are not stock. I have seen vin tags in two places under the hood and both do match...they are rivet tags though so i will need to find a stamped panel to be sure.

What are the plans for that?

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
I like orange. The plans are to update the cage and get a modern log book, get the car cleaned up and sorted and then enter some events. I might just get it sorted for Sandblast next spring and then just run as course opening car as a shakedown. I believe the motor and gearbox are good and i just need to tune and do maintenance on them. I need to clean, and figure out the wiring, address some other issues...but the car is in good condition and mostly needs updating...new belts and seats etc...

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
Have you started it up? If not rotate by hand for a bit and drop some extra oil into it. The balance shaft bushings tend to get dry from sitting. It is good to try and get some lubrication to them before running.
Mine had sat for 13 years, so I drop the oil, filled it up with fresh, and and turned it over by hand for a little bit before it's first run.

It got started before I ever saw it....the person who sold it had it running...so hopefully that didn't cause any damage. I will change the engine and transmission oil.

2 liters of MTL, just don't overfill, it will screw up the speedo gears
Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
Here is a pretty good wiring diagram. Much better then the one in the service manual

Re: 1968 V4 Rally Car
thanks for the diagram. I am not sure if it is going to help me though. This car has a custom circuit breaker panel built into the glove box door. Problem is that I have no idea of what any of the breakers go to....going to have to put a fresh battery in and turn them off one by one if I can.
