Very good. The time and labor are the same for replacing an engine. If you have the option and funds, put in a well rebuilt one in lieu of an unknown condition used one. As I get older, time seem to be too valuable and pulling it out again just to re-do is a pita.

That definitely sounds like a good solution, even better if they offer some sort of warranty on the engine, but theres definitely a lot of value in just having it done right the first time.

Hope you can get it back together in short order, I've been driving my 900 this week as the weather turns cool and they really are amazing cars

Very true indeed, in my case it's more of an "no place to really work on the car" problem...

They offer a year of warranty or 20.000kms I believe on the block.

The weather here is getting colder, in other words Boost season has opened! Too bad I have to wait a few weeks before I can enjoy my 900 again..

The what?

If you look at the OEM diff spider gear area you will see a 1/2" dia axle. The Quaife is completely open, thus the springs and plungers will free float.
The fix is very simple if you have extra parts. Cut down one of the stems, or both to allow the spring to coil bind. This will ensure the spring can do its job. IIRC, we only cut one plunger. This will take up the extra space from the "missing" axle. You will need a die grinder with a cut off wheel as these are hardened.

If you mean that you can look through the diff where the axles go in. There's a coin like piece in there to seal it.

Yes, in the centerline of the differential. OEM vs the Quaife, there is a difference. Have to make up for the missing shaft.

Actual part. You can see the face of the plungers riding on the center shaft.

Interesting, that was not a part I saw in our batch.
You do have to split the diff in half to get it into the case, so you might want to use some sticky bearing grease to keep it in place on assembly, or feed it in from one end.

Someone else who has one, said he had to take a piece out of the gearbox housing to get it in, I guess he tried to put it in in one piece..

My shop has started on putting in the new block and also installing the quaiffe. But my mechanic has encountered a problem..



The diff came out of a classic box according to the guy I bought it from, but there's something missing here...

The speedo sprocket can't be installed now..

Very similar dimensions except one.. L2/A is near 3cm longer on the 900 classic version..

That might explain the "extra" coin that sat in the center of the diff.
Also looking back at some older pictures (Feb 2007) of the diff we got, there is not the counterbores on the tapered end of the housing.
I'm afraid you might be right? Quaife made for a 9000.
