I just picked up my first 96. I always loved Sonetts, 99s, 900s, and 9000s, but never really felt the same about the 92, 93, 95, and 96 until the past few years. Anyway, a good friend sent me a C list ad for a 73 96 that had to be gone in 2 weeks due to the owner moving. Knowing that my wife would murder me and I can't afford another car, I forwarded the ad to my brother, who is part of a Texas Saab group on Facebook. No one was interested in the car so I emailed the owner a week later saying I could only give so much if no one bought the car in time. He promptly responded and wanted me to come see the car. Boy were my expectations wrong. The car turned out to be an older restoration in need of a motor swap with a "rebuilt" motor in the trunk and a few extra parts included. We struck a deal and the little 96 came home with me.
Will post pics later along with my progress.

Re: 73 96
Looking forward to seeing the progress! I too have never had the same desire to own the 92-96's for some reason but they do seem like they are very cool cars in their own way. Hope the build goes well for you...
I'm as guilty as anyone, but its good to see some new projects being started, we need to inject some life back into this forum. Make Saabrally Great Again

Re: 73 96
I know what you mean. It's been a while since I've been around here. I haven't had any interest in my Saab's or cars in general for a while. Turning wrenches for a living really killed my desire. Luckily I just got the job I had been hoping for and now my love for old cars has returned. This little old 96 reignited that.
Re: 73 96
Finally getting some progress on the little 96. I disassembled the recently "rebuilt" engine that came with the car, and found it had actually been gone through. The overspray on everything had me thinking "spray paint rebuild". Glad I was wrong.

Had a little adventure with a western diamondback rattlesnake. It was hiding feet from me next to the SiS
I hope to have it running by next week

Re: 73 96
Be good to put the steel gears in the new motor. Or certainly save them if the fiber gears in the other motor were new.
I like your allusion, I assume it is because the steel balance gear has not been pulled on to alignment with the gear set yet. Other wise it looks 1 tooth off.
Haven't worked on a V4 motor in years. All so simple.

Re: 73 96
When I discovered the steel gears, I immediately swapped out the balance shaft gear. Not too concerned about the cam gear as they rarely fail.
The optical illusion pic made me do a double take. The gear was not pressed all the way on to the balance shaft.
I love the simplicity of the v4, or the B engine for that matter. It's almost therapeutic for me. I used to work on BMW'S for a living, and I can honestly say I hate most of them.
