Not sure if that makes my argument better or worse ;)

I've been wondering what fuel will do to plastic manifolds...

Of course, you could also get a rapid prototype of a manifold done in different kinds of plastic. Cost would probably be around $300 (rough guess)

As cheesy as plastic intakes sound, they would be an easy place to save 10 or 20 lbs.

a lot of intake manifolds are in plastic now. Of course plastic technology has come a long way in the last 20years.

I can't imagine the intake weighing more than 10lbs.

Yeah for a short adapter manifold I don't think the difference between an aluminum one and a plastic is going to be a huge weight savings, I was just curious about the cost of building and/or dis/advantages.

well those neons with the plastic manifolds always seem to be missing their plastic manifolds at the junk yards... I dislike even having a distributor in the engine bay, it's like having an eggshell under your hood and if you break it the car stops running. plastic intake manifolds seem like one more thing that is too easy to get broken / melt / cause vacuum leaks, or get stripped where the fuel rail bolts up.

Seems like a fine thing to have if you are only going to use a car for 10-15 years of road use and don’t mind about replacing the manifold once in a while (most Neons) but for rally or race use, I’d wonder about their durability.
Less brake more gas!

Not to mention lower intake temps a few degrees

Probably has an impact on heat sink as well.

As far as weight goes....lets say stock weighs 10lbs and plastic weighs 3, thats still 7 pounds lighter....it adds up. But I am sure the reason car companies are doing it is that it is a lot cheaper to make a plastic intake then it is to make an aluminum one with the cost of materials rising as they are now.

Luke wrote:Yes, the MSS piece is pressure cast aluminum. A very nice casting IMO. They were probably done in a large batch a long time ago and I'm betting when Jack sells out there won't be anymore. There is that company in sweden still producing though.

As for the injection molding: Not on my car.

When I saw the Pierce website I knew I remembered it. This is why:
http://www.piercemanifolds.com/mangoletsi.pdf

they list a manifold for 99s and another for V4s

Huh, thats cool! They also have blank DCOE flanges for custom manifolds... Somebody should email them for a price on the 99 manifold.

I would bet we could still make our own flanges for cheaper....16v or 8v since we can cut out the middle man and go straight to the water jet. however, its worth looking into.
