Guess what showed up in our shop.....

Postby DrewP » Wed Dec 16, 2009 1:32 pm

A customer told me that he had this sitting around, and brought it in to show Walter and I.

This is allegedly the only un-machined S&R 16v prototype head casting left, he spoke with some people at the factory who said they could still make up a set of cams and do all the finish machining, but he's probably going to just keep it like this, it'd take a ton of money to make it useable, and it's an interesting little bit of history as it is.

The three sections were planed, but nothing else was done. Cam journals, lifter bores, combustion chambers, plug wells are all completely un-touched.

8) Good to know! I can only go off what he tells me! I can pass on the message if there are other blanks that could be cut to be useable, doing more than one at once would make it substantially more affordable.

I've seen some of the drawings for some of the additional parts that need to be built in able to fit this head. There's a LOT that needs to be done.

No header or intake manifold?

Where did it come from?

Machining would be nothing too special for the right shop, although not cheap, line boring would be the biggest concern.
Inlet and exhaust manifold would be straightforward.

Forgot to mention, don't get the work done in the UK by British Engineers, best to get it done in the states :P

So most of the people on this site know, its not exactly a secret, I've been working for some time on putting one of these together for the silver and green chassis in my project thread...
I have most of the original kit, but I am missing a few pieces...
Even with almost all of the right bits, an entire machine shop and a 5 axis mill at my disposal its going to a real challenge to get the thing together! But I love challenges, so why not :)

Would be really interested to talk to the person that owns that head if you have any contact information...

It looks like you've been putting that new mill and lathe to good use already!
I love this part:
"Step 493, build your own distributor using drawing 'Distributor'."
