ha, well i guess i was just reacting to the "wider tires won't do as much at the speeds that auto-x is done at"... like you were saying you only need wide tires when you go faster than 35mph

We wouldn't want that now! Everytime I feel my ability to see is simply too keen, I like to take a look at TSN to temporarily blind me back into submission.

But that's a winter rally, and it's commonly known taht skinnier tires are better in the snow regardless.

Incidentally, a 99 and 900 were both campaigned to national Solo2 championships in the mid-80s. They're out-classed now (can you say Mini?), but in their day were obviously up to the task.

The Mini has dominated H Stock for a few years now, while the supercharged version has dominated G Stock (those cars with LSD, anyway). The latter car's classing has been very controversial: a lot of people feel that it should be in D Stock, pitted against other FWD cars with decent power, handling, and LSD (Type R, Mazdaspeed Protege, et al).

That said, there are people who believe the new Scion tC will give the Mini a run for its money in HS, and others who think the Civic Si can potentially unseat the S in GS. Should be an interesting season.

I've autocrossed a well-prepped S a few times -- fun cars, and grip like, well, they handle pretty darn well. But you knew that. :)

I can see how the Cooper can be a frustrating car to compete with, seeing as you can get typical Mini handling and be in h-stock, low enough to be competing with econo-boxes due to the fact that it only has 115 HP.

I don't have an LSD, so looks like I'll be doing some nice one-wheel peels around the cones. And I don't have the $1100 needed to buy one, nor do I have the time/place/money/Bentley manual to tear down the transmission.

And yes, from what I hear, the Csi will be competitive. It actually beats the mini in skid pad by a whopping .01g (I think). However, I don't think anyone in the Mini community is really impressed with the Tc, but we'll see what mods can do...

edit- i've never seen a LSD this cheap... what the...?

A quaife is $1100, and a Helical is $400?

I thought helical was a brand.... shows what I know..

So, then why the price difference? ebay scheister crap?

EDIT- sorry, didn't even see OBX brand, lol. Apparently the OBX helicals are simply Quaife knockoffs, and are significantly cheaper. I've heard of some failing on other cars, but I don't think a lot of mini owners like substituting cheaper parts for real things. Those of us mini drivers that are of a less monied nature however, are more interested in alternatives.

On a good not, I found out that the Torsen unit from the Ford Focus SVT 6 speed getrag trans which happens to be the exact same trans as in my car, also fits the mini's, and can be bought from Ford racing for significantly less money, I'm hearing around $700 and change.

Torsen originally designed this LSD for the Cooper S, but Ford marketed instead and sells it through Fordracingparts.com
