Fantastic destruction

Postby Jordan » Fri Feb 24, 2012 9:19 am

Ok , secret project I'm working on at the shop ( sort of ;) ). I thought I'd share the fun failure you get with a few season of sticky tires + quaife. Also some neat case modifications.

I should note the driver didn't break, its was machined to fit the Quaife.

Looks about right based on other peoples stories of failures. LSD decides to attempt escape from the passenger side of the gearbox case.

Impressive! Was this a turbocharged car?
What's the story/theory behind the case modifications? (and I'm not talking about the modifications which ended the box's life)
The kind of dirty that doesn't wash off :eyebrows:

I imagine that made a bit of a racket. I think I remember seeing a gearbox on the floor at Eric Nelson's like that. Something with extra oil capacity added to the pan. Is all this related to Kippy's IT car? I heard a rumor that a familiar looking 1980 99 B turbo might make its way over to your shop as well.

Oops.

Is that from Nat Wentworth's old IT car? I'd corresponded with him some years back when he was still running a c900; he was running a 9000 Quaife at the time.

Ok so Kip said it OK to talk about...hahah. We're getting the ITB car back on the track this season. Yes, its from Nat's old IT car and I'm in swapping the 9000 Quaife.

It was a non-turbo (ITB) engine with seasons of hard track abuse. Like Seth said, ring gear, exit stage right. The modifications are for extra oil capacity, and the welded plates at the top are just for baffling.

The 9000 Quaife is pretty neat, you can actually install it fully assembled (loose ring gear).

Maybe one of Luke's new swanky diff covers will help... couldn't hurt! :-D

I'll post up some photos of the project soon. I'd very much like the '80 99T to show up at my shop sometime, but I have not heard such things...

My agents inform me that Kip may broker a deal for Nat to purchase said vehicle from the Menkster. Delivery into your care for a mojo adjustment would be the immediate plan. Targa Newfoundland and beyond would be the slightly longer range goal.

Ha, I talked to Kip earlier and he had no idea either, but it needs to get back into fighting form....
