I pulled the clutch today and took a look at that missing dowel Luke mentioned. I filled the hole with JB Weld's "Cold Weld" and put things back together with a new centerforce friction disk.
couple of questions:
seems like a major bear to get that throwout bearing past the pressure plate. It's not because the wire tool is mis-installed, as the problem is more fitting it past the outer section (non tines) portion of the pp. Is that just a regular problem on one of these? Haynes talks of stuff that's not here on this 77 model (no clutch fork)
Also, I didn't install the centerforce PP because I couldn't figure out how to A) remove the tool from the other PP and B) reinstall it in the new PP. The PP that was in there looked new. How is that procedure done?
No major leaks. It was pissing oil before.
Clutch talk
Per,
You get the ring out by sliding the PP under a press and depressing the fingers, people that don't have a press just put a jack under the weight of the car with a round disk on the center of the fingers and depress it that way.
You did unbolt the slave cylinder right? It would really fight you with that installed, just 3 bolts to undo.

Oh you want to slide the whole assembly in all together with slave cyl, PP, disk sandwiched together. The first couple time are tough but then you learn some tricks (I slot one bolt hole on the slave cyl) and you can have it in and out in 30 minutes.
Edit: ok looks like you did it correctly but was the slave depressed (like all the fluid squeezed out to make it shorter)

Ha thats when you know you are on the right track with a SAAB. SAAB designers were totally off in their own world when they came up with this stuff. Sometimes its like they never saw another car before. Thats how they came up with so many great innovations, but it also means that you must cleanse your prejudiced mind before you work on them. After a while you will become in sync and wonder how you worked on anything else. Either that or you will beat your head hard against the wall is frustration. It can go either way.

I bought a new radiator on fleabay last week for $65 shipped. It should arrive today and then I'll be rolling ABBA-style. The old radiator looked a little shabby, and I couldn't pass up that deal, since it was coming out anyway.

DeLorean wrote:looking good, so I noticed you have the gear drive trans, did you source a new O-ring for the input shaft? As we found the other day, this is rather critical part to have in good condition if you don't want your new clutch soaked in gear oil
not a gear drive primary trans, its got an internal slave, consider yourself very lucky Per
